Fuel Filter

Tried search but as it does't work! Wanting to change my in line fuel filter, but can't find it.

Any clues on where it is located? I have a 8.1 2500HD 2005.

That's right, there's no inline filter.

Thats what I figured when I couldn't find it , BUT parts store sells one so that is why I was

confused.

Other engine sizes do have an inline filter... at least in the 1500s My 01 and 05 both had a filter along the inside of the driver's side frame rail. That may be what they are listing.

I just had mine replaced today on an '03 2500HD and it took .5 hr labor, so I doubt mine was in the tank, either that or I lucked out on that one....now if only someone could explain how a plug change is rated for 3.0 hr labor....that's the mystery.

I could be wrong, but I think the 2500's changed to intank filters in '04.

Yes that's correct. To meet more stringent EPA imposed EVAP limits (fuel vapors) most manufacturers are adopting a returnless fuel system. The older trucks with a replaceable filter have a vacuum diaphram fuel pressure regulator that continuously sends excess pumped fuel back to the tank. The newer ones have a electronically modulated fuel pump and no fuel is ever returned to the tank. Good for emmissions bad for us. You can't service the filter without pulling the pump and any contaminates in the fuel line (corrosion etc.) stay on top of the fuel injectors and build up.

 

My 8.1 needs a fresh fuel filter every 40K or so to stay free flowing, and the ones in the tanks aren't that much larger.
