How-to On Replacing The Front Axle End Seals

My buddy's '02 Tahoe Z71 and my '01 GMC Sierra 2500 HD have oil coming out of the end seals on the front IFS diffs. His aren't leaking too bad but enough to throw some oil around, the driver's side one on mine is pretty messy, the pasenger side not as bad. Any tips or experience would be helpful. Do you think they'll just leak again? I'm reading on here that it's just a matter of time before they start leaking again...

I hope someone posts some info on this, my 03 z71 is doing the same thing on both sides and I was also wondering how hard / expensive this is to do.

I need to do this on my 04 Silverado as well. My wifes 04 Trailblazer was fixed under warranty, and my work truck, an 05 Dmax was just fixed for the second time. I know several others that have had the same problem with under 50k miles. That's 3 in my driveway!!

I'm beginning to think these seals are prone leaking and in fact are actually a standard feature of GM IFS front diffs :cheers: . I think what I will do if this will be either an expensive or difficult task is monitor the oil level. If it really doesn't drop by any detectible amount at each oil change (I do my own), then I'm probably not going to worry about too much about it at this point :cheers: ....

my front passenger side seal was leaking slightly and I had it fixed at the dealer about 2 months ago and cost me $350 total. I think most of the charge was labor and the seal and new gear oil was only about $30. They have to drain the differential, remove the cover, remove the brake caliper, remove the axle, replace the seal, then put everything all back together

Looks like on mine you could just undo the axle where the two half shafts bolt together, and not have to remove anything from the hub area. In fact that is how I notice the leak, both of them are wet right there.

Unbolt the cv joints from the axle flanges. Remove the front drivshaft at the front pinion flange. Remove 2 bolts from the right axle tube mount to the frame support. Remove the upper left differential mounting bolt. Remove the steering center link from the pittman arm OR remove bolts from the steering box and pry box forward {shaft will telescope} . Loosen left rear lower differential mounting bolt and lower front differential from vehicle , it will be hanging from the rear mount mount bolt on the left side. Put truck in 4wd with key on , wiring still hooked to axle. Tap axle flanges with a hammer to remove, they are held in by internal snap rings that will dislodge {maybe}. If unit is not in 4wd there is a thrust washer that can fall out of place on the right axle shaft where the disconnect is. Replace axle seals and reassemble. This can be done in well under an hour by a experienced GM tech with the right tools. I've done them in 8 minutes on a hoist.

I think that dealer ripped you off. I had BOTH of mine done by my local guy, he used oem seals and charged me $190.00. They dont have to remove/replace all that stuff you list. They also dont have to drain the diff.

    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back. 
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
    • That's bad.  Like, its probably destroying the stub axle the CV slides into.   Do you have a proper lift installed with differential lowering brackets?  Did you install AT4/Trail Boss factory CV axles?  
    • Hot? New Jersey? Today? I was working on my old 2000 Silverado 1500 today. Believe me, it was boiling hot today. As it has been.
