1st Snow In Chicago

Well, we got our 1st taste of nasty, Winter weather, today. It started as a dusting of light snow, about 1/2 an inch. Then freezing rain set in...froze everything solid!

Since this is my 1st p/u, I've been curious as to how she handles in the snow. I got decent traction in 2WD when the locking rear diff kicked in. Auto 4WD did better but true 4WD was just as expected. I really didn't notice the back end was lighter than the Tahoe.

The next real test will be when we get several inches of snow...not sure when that will be. Tomorrow, it will be in the 40's so all this stuff will be gone.

I was driving around in 6 inches of snow today on the roads in Auto 4wd I was driving carefully because turning corners and stopping was still sloppy. I was amazed at the amount of idiot drivers here in MN. Just because you have 4wd doesn't mean your God of the road in snow. I was going 40-45 on the highway and you wouldn't believe the people blowing by me. Not just SUV's and trucks, but also sedans and compacts people think they can fly around in this stuff. Not too mention people riding my ass with all the snow on the highway. I was thinking of pointing and laughing if I saw them in the ditch later on.

Most people definitely don't know how to drive in snow and ice and there was a lot of ice today. Even this morning with just a dusting of snow, I saw several people in ditches. My truck did amazingly well for a 2wd with such a long wheelbase and stock tires. I was very impressed. I thought the rear would slide around and the G80 kick me all over the place but as long as I didn't get too far into the gas she did well. I won't say it wasn't easy to break it loose but it was easy to control if I did.

I know what you guys mean about idiot drivers in the snow, even with 4WD. I know 4WD gives me an advantage as far as better traction but I don't get crazy. It doesn't mean I won't slide or lose control. What's even more important is stopping. That doesn't change whether you have 2WD or 4WD. When I see those idiots spin out or go in the ditch unharmed, I do laugh. So Svensk, go ahead and chuckle.

Even better, buy some chain/tow straps. Drive around and find the morons in the ditch and laugh as they pay you 35 bucks a pop to pull them out of a ditch. Even at 35 bucks its cheaper than a tow truck, and you get to laugh and benefit from their stupidity and misfortune.

Yeah the old G80 isn't bad in the snow...we got a little here this weekend. My tires suck the big one though....M+S my ass...these tires suck in rain let alone snow.

All in all though, the truck performed well, and I got to have a little fun. We may get 10 snow days a year here in Victoria, so I can wait till the tires are worn out to get better ones.

I drove today in the 1" of slushy snow today with the 07 WT and stock tires. I was not impressed with the stock Good Year tires with only 1,500 miles on them. They were horrible on the snow. I recent tires that I bought you could feel the tires bite in the snow almost like the back end of the truck digging in. Not with these Good Year tires. I'm not impressed at all.

Those factory goodyear tires suck. All the negative reviews on tirerack.com pretty much prove that. But I'm kinda suprised more folks up north don't put on a dedicated set of snow tires for the winter months. All season tires have definately improved... but still no match for the snow tire.
