New Wheels/tires Vibration When Braking

Recommended Posts

I have an 05 silverado 1500 4WD

I just got a new set of 35's and wheels - they came in mounted and supposedly properly balanced already

I just had a shop bolt em to the truck for me yesterday and now the truck vibrates when braking.

It usually doesn't start vibrating until the truck gets below say 30 and close to stopping.

Take my foot off the break vibration immediately stops.

Doubt if it's related, probably just a bad alignment...

I told them to check the alignment when they had it. Didn't want my new tires gettin screwed up, they said it was out.

They sware it's exactly where it should be but the truck is pulling to the right a bit.

Lift has been on there for about a year - breaking, steering etc have all been fine. No vibrations until the new wheels got put on

I'm guessing it's just balancing, but why would it only be when breaking????

But any ideas would be appricated.

Does look good though :)

Thanks guys, Kenny

did you go from stock wheels to aftermarket wheels? If so there are clips on the rear brakes that you have to remove when adding aftermarket rims.

Yeah I just replaced the stock 17" rims with some new aftermarket 17" rims.

hmmm what do they look like, or is it fairly obvious once you get the wheels off?

Very little chance of mis-alignment causing vibration. If rear drum clips have been removed it may be an out-of-spec wheel. New wheels, though not bent, may have been machined on an eccentric and have a hop. Low speed vibration is often mistaken for bad brake rotor trueness because one is generally braking when they are going 30 mph and low speed is precisely where an out-of-round wheel will misbehave. Brake pedel pressure places the driver in more solid contact with vehicle harmonics that ordinarily would be absorbed by upholstery cushioning. While elevated on a rack, hand spin the wheels on the vehicle and eyeball wheel and tire runout. If you can feel a problem you can generally see it.

Could do it myelf but I'll probably stop by that d**n tire shop and tell them to earn their pay lol

I'll try to get it done tonight and post an update.

I watched the video. Doug seems like a nice guy. Interesting about the emergency brake set ups. Disc/drum. Subaru style. But the bottom line is that there are people out there with way too much money. But they do keep Doug in business.

d**n are these people dumb. I explained it to them even showed them a picture I found online.

No idea whatsoever, then another guys says my truck doesn't even have them and so forth.

Then they want to check the balance on my tires, 25 minutes of waiting.....our balancer is broken we forgot.

I'll take one of these d**n things off myself tonight and have a look.

This is why mechanics get bad name. My usual guys is very good, hell he's improved on skyjackers design. Just didn't wwant to bother him with something so simple.
