700r Tranny Problems

First of all I am new to the forum. I have a 1985 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 Pickup. Supposedly the tranny has been rebuilt. I know its not the original motor. Who ever worked on this truck had no idea what they were doing. any how I have had the truck for a month and a half. Got the motor finally running right. Now the tranny is acting up. If shifts fine from first to second. When it is supposed to shift to 3rd it downsifts back to either first or second. When I get off the gas it is freewheeling. Get back on the gas and it will engage. But never goes to 3rd gear or overdrive. Who ever had the truck took out the computer. Im not really sure how much the computer controlled the tranny on this truck. It has shifted fine for the 1 1/2 months I had it so I am pretty sure its not a computer problem. Tranny fluid is full and nice and red. I appreciate any help I might get here. Its not my daily driver but I still would like to get it fixed ASAP.

Are you sure that truck even had a computer? Even if it did, it didn't have much to do with the transmission so I don't think that's your problem. I would check the adjustment on the Throttle Valve (TV) cable. These are very sensitive to proper adjustment. There should be a cable that goes from the transmission to linkage on the carburetor. You'll have to look up how to adjust it, I'm not sure how, but that is where I'd start.

Good luck!

Yep,I agree with TahoeMike on both,The computer had nothing to do with the transmission.

And check the "TV" cable,I had an '83 S10 4x4 that was doing the same thing after they rebuilt the 700R4 in it,They adjusted the "TV" cable a little and after that it shifted perfectly!!
