2007 Obs Thin Paint On Hood

I thought I'd try again to find others with the same problem

my 07- 1500 OBS has very thin, brittle paint I've noticed on the hood.

It will chip off if you look at it hard enough.

I just don't get it, I put 25K on my 05 Silverado , same driving pattern and the occasional small rock might get thrown around and bounce off the hood and no problem.

This truck is different, I can't keep up with the rock chips on the hood

I put on a bug shield just to try and cut down on it as the front leading edge of the hood was starting to look like I did a re-paint out of a touch up bottle.

I am in sales and I drive 80% on highway, I know everytime a rock gets thrown up and I check for damage.

The paint on the hood of this truck(red) is just not up to standards compared to what I have had in past GM trucks.

I'm thinking of taking it in for a paint warranty issue at the same time I go back for the new steering shaft upgrade.

any body else have this??

Unfortunately, GM will deny this as a warranty claim. They will tell you it's a road hazard, and paint chips from road hazards are not covered. However, if you go at it as a Factory defect, you MIGHT have a better chance. My 07 Sierra Denali had very thin paint. Although it wasn't chipping, it was too thin as per factory specs. I think factory specs amoute to 5-7 mic measured with a magnet gage. Have them check the paint thickness and see if is up to factory specs first. If it's not you may have a better chance to get it repainted regardless of how many chips are there.

There is another way. GM says that if your paint has suffered from "acid rain" they will repaint it within the first year of warranty. But you'd of already known you had it if you did.

i second what redsled said. i have an 06 1500 sport red reg cab and the paint on that seems thin cuz i have a ton a rock chips on the hood after 20k. i drive on the highway everyday but in heavy traffic. i think once a bird sh!t on my hood and chipped it! my 2001 silvy didnt have near as many rock chips on it when i traded that in after 55k with the same driving habits.

You can thank the EPA for your crappy paint. Over the last 10 years they have removed almost every bit of useful solvents and additives (VOCs) from the painting process in the name of "air quality". The result has been brittle, thinly applied finishes that don't stand up to impacts well. Quality always takes a hit when the government steps in.

It isn't just GM and it isn't going to get any better soon. I have a friend that works for Nissan and they are having the same issues on their cars.

thanks for the advice.

will the dealership have one of these gauges to test the paint thickness?

It is a large dealership in a town of 130 K with a very modern paint department.

I would hope that they would.

If they have a "very modern" paint department, I'm sure they will know how to measure paint thickness.

Ask them BEFORE they check for thickness what it should be. Don't be surprised if it's at the lower end of the perameters.

update on the situation

I took my truck in to get the steering shaft replaced under warranty and I got to talking about my hood paint

I ended up taking it to the body shop and spoke to the guy who handles warranty for the body shop

I told him, as you guys suggested that I wanted it checked for a defect of not being up to thickness standards.

I couldn't just say it chipped too easy, that wouldn't fly

They sent me out to the paint supplier who sells them their paint who had a meter.

The guy in the dealer body shop who had a meter was out that day and the meter was in his box locked up.

The guy to checked it said if it was compared to many other factory paint jobs it was about equal in thickness except for several spots that were thin even for factory paint. The paint was not uniform at all

He also said that a normal after market paint process would about twice as thick as the factory.

The body shop manager and service manager took his advice and agreed to repaint the hood under warranty at no cost.

I don't think I'm gonna be able to work out a loaner car, but I can work around that
