'98 Vortec Performance

question:

I have a '98 5.7 vortec that is in need of an overhaul. I can't have my truck in the shop that long so i'm just going to build a new engine and swap 'em out. I'm trying to see what my options are without modifying the computer system. I was thinking of putting in a customized LS engine or i could put an old school 350 in there, or i could modify the 350 vortec it's got but im not sure what the best mods for it are- its kinda a crossover because its got a Gen1 block with the vortec heads and intake? what do ya'll think?

You mention the time issue (can't have the truck in the shop for an overhaul) but then you talk about custom, etc. the quickest would be getting a replacement long block and changing out what you have. I don't know if you have emission testing where you are, but you need to watch out for that also if it applies. I just replaced the intake gaskets on my 98 Yukon recently, it has 145k miles and is still going strong. Your computer will expect what you have so if you change, hopefully you have the skills to deal with the computer (or a buddy that does and likes working on your rig). Good luck either way!

I would recommend to get the kit that converts the poppet fuel injection (CPI) to MFI when you replace the engine and it will better for the engine. Also I would get a 383 long block.
