Best Retractable Bed Cover.

Looking at buying a retractable bed cover for my 08 SD and I was wondering what is the best as far as build quality and color. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got the TruXedo Lo Pro on my truck and even at 4 years old it still looks like it did new "you have to spray it down once in awhile with leather treatment to keep it looking new though . A hard top will give you more $$$ when you trade your truck in but the nice thing about TruXedo Lo Pro is its on when you don't need your truck as a Truck and if it is on and you need your Truck bed it rolls all the way up to the back window out of the way and serves as a good cushion to protect your back window when you have large Items in your truck.

I have a torza top, also 4 years old. It is tri fold, holds up well and is installed or removed in about 30 seconds.

If you're looking at hard retractable covers, I'd stay away from the Roll Bak brand. I had one as a demo unit on my truck for about 6 months, and the finish deteriorated really badly. I'd probably look at the Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit. Probably the best of the bunch,

second in the Roll-N-Lock. I don't like the tailgate lock part of the Roll-N-Lock, you have to screw a little panel onto your tailgate.

 

And, all the retractables I've ever dealt with, (4 years in the truck accessory business) have leaked water in the rain.

 

I'd take a look at the Extang Solid Fold. Hard folding cover that installs in less than 5 minutes, and seems to seal pretty well.

Do you get ice where you are? Will a roll-up still work iced up? Partly for that reason and because I wanted to have a completely removeable top I have an Advantage Hard Hat folding tonneau cover. It latches underneath, no locks to freeze on the top, and can fold so only the front third is closed, or be completely removed. Not quite as flexible as a rollup, but better in other ways. It is probably more water resistant (no tonneau is waterproof) because there are no seams/joints in the top, and it overlaps the edges.

As far as hard ones go, I went for the Pace Edwards Full Metal over the Roll N Lock due to the lower profile and better locking system (for me, I already had a tailgate lock and didn't need the cover to lock into the tailgate, just lock in position when closed).

 

I've had it for about a year and have had no problems at all with it.

I have a Roll-n-Lock on my current truck. This is my first retractable cover that I have owned. It was a toss up between the RnL and the Pace Edwards Jack Rabbit. The shop that I got mine at (and also the shop where my brother-in-law bought his RnL) recommended it over the Jack Rabbit, stating better quality, etc. (Personnaly I think it is just a higher profit margin )

 

I have no real complaints with the RnL. It does lock to the tailgate. The bar on the tailgate does get in the way when you are dragging something out of the bed. You have to lift items over it so as to not damage it or the item. My truck came with the electric sliding rear window. I didn't want it but it was already on the truck. Once when I was driving home from the lake and had the slider open, I get hearing a wind noise like the noise you get when the moulding is flappng due to the hood deflector. After about 100 miles I noticed that the rythym of the noise matched the bounce in the cover. I closed the slider and the noise went away. I do get some water in the bed, but I think it is more of a design issue with the tailgate fit to the bed (gap so big that the normal tailgate seal gaskets can't cover it) than it is the cover leaking. If I have a lot of water sitting on top of the cover and I open the cover real fast, the water pools up by the bos and then spills into the bed as the cover fully retracts.

 

I have heard that if you have ice or snow on the cover, you should not retract the cover. I think it is because the cover could freeze up in the box it retracts into. Or maybe the channels could get clogged with ice. IDK -

 

As I said this is my first retractable cover. In the past I have had the vinyl covers and a fiberglass cover. They all have advantages and disadvantages. Would I buy another one (for my next truck?) I don't really know. I'll have to see what's available on the market.
