Just want to know what type of transmission is in a 1988 1500 Chevy? its a standard options with a overdrive automatic, with a 305 TBI.

Just want to know when my high kms 305 dies if a older 350 will bolt up to it.

An automatic would be a 700R4. Its not electronic, the bell housing is cast as one piece with the case, so it should bolt up.

The transmission bolt patterns on the Gen 1 Chevy small blocks 305 / 350 are the same. Be aware that the pre 1987 small blocks had a 2 piece rear main seal and so I believe that the flexplate / crankshaft bolt pattern is different. Also the angle of the intake manifold bolts was different on the pre-1987 engines.

I replaced the 305 in my old '84 Caprice with a 350. It's a straight bolt in - no problems.
