8.1 Liter Oill Usage

Had my oil light come on today. It is cold as all get out here so I have been a little lax in checking it.

She was about two quarts low after 3k miles. Had a buddy tell me that these motors use a little oil and that is was somewhat normal. I have never owned a vehicle that would Normally use that much.

Right or wrong on this?

Thanks in advance and if this has already been covered I apologise.

My dad has an '05 and it uses about that amount of oil (1 quart every 1500 miles). He has been driving GM Big Blocks since the late 80's and all of his have used oil. I would say it is normal, just need to remember to keep an eye on it.

Same here it's normal, that's how I know when it's time to change oil. It seem to be worst when it's winter.

Thanks, nice to know. I was afraid I had an issue of some sort.

where in Mi are ya?

My topkick at work (8.1L with LP conversion) uses 1 quart a week. Granted this thing grunts around a 20K lb. vehicle 12-14 hours every day.

I owned a 2002 - 2500 Avalanche with an 8.1 liter engine. It used about one-quart per thousand miles. I sold it after one year, mostly because it seemed like an old worn-out engine. No need for something new to be using that much oil and leaving a trail of blue smoke behind the rig.

Other than that, the 8.1 ran strong. Never met a gas station that it didn't want to visit.

I'm very much happier with my 2006 Duramax. Plus the regular truck has rear visibility, which the Avalanche doesn't (the Avy is one blind sonofabitch)

I'm about the same with my 02' It goes through about 1.5-2 qts every 5k. The truck might see 50 miles a week, now that I bought a daily driver for work.
