Installing Remote Start

Recommended Posts

Hey, I am going to be installing a remote start on my pickup ('02 ext. cab chevy) this weekend and am wondering how involved it is. Any advice? Also, anyone have any wiring diagrams that would help would be great. I am hoping I will be able to do it myself and save time/money, but if its too involved I might have to take it to a shop and have it done.

It's not something I would recommend you try yourself unless you're pretty comfortable with your vehicle's electrical system and have some experience installing remote starters previously. These things can get tricky. Just an opinion, but I'd take it to a shop you know does good work (this is key) and let them do it. It shouldn't run you too much.

Don't know on an '02, but I wasn't gonna get into all that security bypass and module stuff on my '07. Plus, I don't know alot about that stuff either. The labor to have mine installed was $40.00. For that amount of money, I didn't think twice. I'd ask the shop what it costs to install it. I have wiring diagrams for your truck. PM me, and I will hook you up.

Now, I don't mind giving anyone wiring diagrams, or other repiar info, as God knows the folks here are great. But my stuff only goes to '05....

i see others have already suggested this, but go to the web site of the manufacturer and they will supply all info on wiring, security bypass, and any relays needed for your truck. I have installed my own in my 2002 sierra, and one in a 2004 silverado with no problems at all. Reading the directions seem like it is confusing, but when you are looking at all of the wires in front of you, it is pretty straight forward. I would only suggest that you follow the directions and split and splice your wires together. No mechanical fastners!!! I have heard bad stories on the hacks that call themselves installation specalists!! Hope this helps.

I've done 4 myself but if I could've had them done for $40 bucks a pop, I would have.

These took about 3-4 hours apiece and my time is worth more to me than that.

Ok, so finally got the remote start today. Reading through the instructions, it mentions several types of anti-theft systems gm uses. What would an 02 have (Passkey, Passlock, or passkey 3)?

If its passlock, where could I get a VATS/PASSLOCK bypass module. It says Passkey 3 is used on 99 and newer, but wouldn't that require a chip in the key to start it? My pickup will start with a regular copy key. any info will help.

The manufactuer of the remote you bought should be able to both answer your questions and supply the by-pass moduale needed.

I'm almost positive it's the passlock though. If so you'll need a multimeter to check the resistence of the factory system and set the by-pass to match it.

Alright, so finally had a good day and got everything wired up. Only now it won't start (at all) unless I unplug the bypass (and even then only with the key). I had some trouble discerning which were the correct wires as there were several of the same color coming out of the steering column. Anyone got any advice for this (besides taking it somewhere, already checked on that. No one around here will since I didn't buy the remote start from them.)?

So apparently for some strange reason they require you to have all the plugs actually plugged in before it will do anything...go figure.

Anyway, got it all installed and it works like a charm! Just have to install some relays for the door locks and the cargo light and I'll be done with it. If anyone is thinking about installing one themselves, prepare for a good 3-8 hours of work, depending on your skills and how late you start (or if you have good lights to work with). All in all it wasn't too bad.

Oh, and the range on this thing is amazing. I can start it about 2000 ft away while in a building, with several buildings in between me and the truck. The remote has a display that shows you when it starts...pretty cool little feature.

Ahh, they are a little fancier than when I installed them. And they are nice to have as long as they keep working.

Good to see you got through the passkey. Did you need to go out and get an additional unit to control this or did it come with the remote start?

I have been think of putting one on either my truck or the burb but all I can think about is the headaches associated with them. (maybe that was just with the Fords) Its just one of those things that once you have, you don't think you can do without.
