Typical Life Of Breaks And Not So Typical?

I have a 2004 Z71 with 170,000 miles on it. I do a lot of work on mountain tops so I don't want my breaks to fail up there. So the last time I sent it in for an oil change I asked them to replaced the breaks. When they checked them the said I still had nearly 60% of pads left and nothing was wrong with them.

Is this typical? Does all that riding down the mountain in low gear pay off?

My wife has almost 75 K on hers and she is on her second set of pads. But that is another story........

I think a lot depends on how you use the brakes. I have a 2001 2500HD and still on the original brakes all the way around. Still look good for wear. i am real careful if pulling a heavy trailer to make certain the trailer braking is properly adjustment so that I do not over use the truck brakes.
