DVD Player

Well, I need to get a new VCR for my TV, but I'm not sure if I should get a DVD player as well.  I don't have any DVD's, but I imagine that would change if I had something to use them in.    I have seen a couple of combos that have both in the same deck, and this is what I'm thinking about.  So, do any of you guys own a DVD player, and was it worth the money in your opinion?  Thanks.

Not until I see major number of movies in video stores....I have DVD on laptop but never use it....

I have to agree with Ryan,get a PS2.

They cost a little more than a good DVD player but you have the gaming capability with it as well as the movie playing feature.

I have a Toshiba DVD player and my brother had the same one but he sold it when he bought the PS2 and he doesn't regret it at all plus the PS2 games are unreal.

I must say, the difference in quality from VCR to DVD is absolutly amazing.  I watched Top Gun on my sis's dvd player and i was like ****!  It looks a lot better than on my VHs.

I'd go for the DVD player.  VHS sucks, and DVD players willmake you into a VHS "Snob".  If I had the money, I'd buy the PS2, but if you don't play viseo games, it's a really expensive DVD player.  The movies are great, lost of extra stuff like commentaries from directors and producers, etc, deleted scenes, and even featurettes on the movie.  Well worth the money for the videos.

Oh yes I'd defineately get a DVD player over VHS.

VHS tapes get really worn out after a while. DVDs don't. (atleast not to my knowledge).

You can cut to the good pats if you want to on DVD w/out hitting the fast forward button. There's also a whole bunch of goodies  you get on the DVD  (Like Kania just said).

 Personally, I'm waiting for a DVD player with the capabilties to burn discs.  I have a bunch of VHS tapes that I want to transfer to disc before they desinigrate, but nothing's available yet.  They are available in Japan but not here.

  I'm also waiting for more stations to broadcast in High Definition before buying a HDTV.  As far as DVD movies, we have a DirecTV satellite that broadcasts in digital format with Dolby 5.1 digital sound.  It's like a miracle from Heaven.  Once you have the info button, you'll never go back to cable or Blockbuster.  No lines, no late fees.  Movies 24/7.  Sweet-

DigUoutThe problem with burning DVD is that a blank DVD costs something like ?.  

If you have a video capture card for your computer you can record your vhs movies to your computer then burn them off as VCD (video cd).  It is another format that most DVD players will accept.  Don't know about the playstation.  Plus, you can put them on regular CD-R's.

I'm assuming that you are talking about copying home movies to DVD.  If you are talking about copying purchased movies, don't waste your time.  That would be like copying a cassette tape to a digital format and recording it on a cd.  That would sound like shiit.

Kansas Kid - Don't hesitate to get a DVD player.  I knew that I wanted one but was worried about not having enough movies to rent or not being able to buy very many, but my local Blockbuster has stocked up on DVD's.   Plus, there are so many cool features on a DVD.    If you are building a home theater, I would avoid using your ps2 as a dvd player.  

Once I add the sub and complete my 5.1 setup, I'm gonna get the fiber optic cables to connect my DVD player to my reciever.

DVD is the future of video ( I think). We have one and use it infrequently but we don't use our VCR very often either.

-Dad (Newbie), does that mean that 8 tracks aren't any good any more?

if so, you won't be able to do that with DVD.

blah, there are ways to get dvd movies burned onto regular cd's to play on dvds, I'll have to look around on my favorite ftp sites for some.

 What in the heck is an 8 track?  ;) I guess I better not tell you that I just got rid of my dial-up internet connection and went the cable route then.

I think I will just get a DVD player and VCR combo, because I feel like LT that DVD is the future of video.  That way I can record stuff for my friends as well.  I did think of getting a PS2, but I don't really play many video games.  Besides, I already have a nice steering wheel/pedal setup for my PC that allows me to play all the racing games I do have.  Now where to dump all those 8-tracks......
