I just traded from a 2003 2500HD D/A to a 2008 3500HD Dually D/A, and thought I'd share my impressions.

 

Too early, obviously to talk about mileage, power, etc (only 150 miles on the truck).

 

My first impression is a much higher "attention to quality" --- the 2003 doors "clanked" when slammed, the 2008 doors have a "clunk" when slammed. On the interior, gone is the el-cheapo plastic look, replaced with attractive wood grain accents, thicker/plusher leather, and just a better appearance. Dash layout is cleaner and more ergonomic.

 

Handling (drove some twisty mountain roads) is vastly improved over the 2003 (maybe partly to wider stance). No body roll, responsive cornering, and far less hard on bumps than I expected from a 11,400# GVWR rig.

 

Some nice touches like standard remote start which also turns on the seat heaters on cold mornings!

 

Downsides: The DIC has been stripped of many nice features, like the multiple oddometers/fuel economy calculators/etc. Worse yet, the DIC controls have been taken off the steering wheel and put in a "take your eyes off the road" location on the dash.

 

Tranny temp gauge has disappeared, now a menu-item on the (inconvenient) DIC.

 

Fender flares are gone! Smallest puddle splash muddies up the lower body panels.

 

Why 17-inch wheels? 19.5 would make more sense to me.

 

Bottom line: Generally pleased, but I can always find something I'd like improved.

Sounds like and awesome truck, I like dually's. The only time that I think that ride gets harsh in them is when there is just enough weight where the overload springs touch, then it is going to get rough.

 

I agree about the wheels, they should really have 19.5 wheels as an option at least.

I know that the HD GMT-900 trucks share alot with the previous HD GMT-800 trucks , so its good to hear that they made improvements on the "new" HDs. What powertrain did you get? Thanks!

Sounds like a very nice truck reading your description I assume you got the SLT package? Same here I think that the leather has improved over the years and I love the new HD's

You'll love the dual wheels when towing the 5'er, especially on windy days or winding roads...

Congrats on the new rig. We just got our first 08 dually in last week I haven't had a chance to drive her yet. Looked her over though and was pretty inpressed by what I was looking at except those wheels. I agree looks like a 6'5 man with a size 8 boot kind of crazy. I have not had time to check the builds either to see if we offer something bigger, if we don't thats a big mistake by GM. Who wants to spend that kind of money on a truck and turn around and drop the change needed to make those wheels look right.
