Traction Control

Does traction control cause premature brake wear? I have a 2008 Serria Crew Cab that was a Christmas present from my wife. A good friend of mine that works for the Blue Oval Company told me that if I keep the traction control on all the time, it would wear the brakes out quicker. Any thoughts?

No.

If it wears the brakes out faster, just get new ones. I think have superior traction trumps $200 dollars worth of brakes. That $200 is pocket change when you are over in a ditch somewhere when you realize...I should have never turned off that traction control, and you end up having to replace that $600 worth of bumper and grill.

Traction Control = Computer Controlled Locking Rear Diff.

Not true, there is not a single wire going to the rear diff.

Traction Control = computer controlled braking/distribution and engine power mgmt.

The only time your brake is applied is when the computer detects slippage. If you never slide, traction control will never come on.

Also, if your wheel is slipping, then the brakes are really only stopping a spinning tire, not the entire truck. how much wear can that cause? Not much.

So in effect, if your traction control kicks in often, your brakes will wear out faster. Of course, when you feel your wheels starting to slip, you could just get off the the throttle but hey, you already paid for something to help you drive.

It must be a very light brake however, as getting on the brakes when your already slipping is counterproductive.
