Sunroof Stuck Open

I disconnected my battery in my 2001 Yukon Xl and now my sunroof is stuck in the open position and will not close, it pulses for a couple seconds and stops. The GM sync procedure says the sunroof needs to be closed to sync it. Any idea on how I can get this to close? I'm wondering if I should disconnect the power again to erase the memory and see if it will close.

Anyone?? I tried disconnecting the battery but no luck. I found a TSB for stuck open Sunroof but first step is to hook up scanner and look for a code.

Can you remove the switch, locate terminals A and F they should be dark green and red. With the key on connect a jumper wire to these terminals (back side please if you go into the face of the connector you can dammage the terminals and the switch will not make contact when you put it back togeather) jump these terminals for 2 seconds and see if the roof moves to the closed position.

Thank you. To clarify, the roof was closed when I disconnected the battery. After job was done and I was driving I noticed a little bit of air noise from the sunroof. I hit the close button and it would not close tighter, I cycled it open and it is now stuck and just pulses for a second and stops when I try to close it.

Ok well try jumping those wires and let me know what happened. The module is timed meaning it runs for x amount of turns of the motor depending on where it thinks the glass is for instance 3 clockwise turns from close to vent and 20 turns from vent to open. There is no sensors just timing based on where it thinks it is. When you re-connected the battery you made it think it was somewhere that it wasn't. Now it's open and thinks it's not. The motor is commanded to open further and you get what you have there. Jumping those wires may make it close then we can do the relearn. If it doesn't go back this way it can be difficult to say the least to trick it back but we can cross that bridge if we need to later.

I jumped "A" and "F", Orange and Green wires respectively, same as trying to use the switch to close it. Same symptoms, just pulsed in a forward motion and stopped.

Just to clarify, E-F but that is (E)Brown to (F)Green, the Redish Orange is "A".

 

Try jumping E (brown wire) to F (red). If this doesn't do anything I would remove the glass from the module and retry.

Well no good, so by removing glass from the module, do you mean drop the ceiling panel and pull out the sunroof?

 

Ick this diagram is crap (colors notoriously wrong) give a try both ways it will not harm anything on this ckt to be wrong.

I can not see any screws that can be reached without pulling the liner down. With a flashlight I can see a phillips head near the front of the glass on each side which attach to a slide but they are not accessible...grrrr

 

 

No need to drop the headliner. There should be 4 screws (probably torx heads) attaching the glass panel to the rails, 2 on each side.

Well here is the update on the stuck sunroof. I removed all trim associated with dropping the headliner to access the sunroof module. There is a allen wrench provision on the motor assembly to try to close the sunroof but it is made from cheap pot metal and it rounded right out when I tried that method. I dropped the sunroof assembly down and removed the motor, closed the sunroof manually and installed the motor. Then with the ignition key "ON", I used the sunroof synronization procedure which simply consists of making sure the sunroof is fully closed, and then placing the sunroof in the "UP" vent position. This tells the motor and control module where the sunroof is. This system does not use any limit switches but uses current monitoring instead. Once the system is confused such as disconnecting the battery with the roof partially open, it will lock itself out.

 

All in all it took about 4 hours, a real PITA for something resulting from a simple task as removing the battery.

Scott,

 

It sounds like I may have the exact issue you did and going to drop the headliner, etc. this weekend to look further. You mentioned that you had to run through the 'synchronization sequence'. I have one question on it though, when you mentioned "and then place the sunroof in the "UP" vent position", did you do this manually or by the switch?

 

Here are the steps if I understand them correctly. Please confirm:

 

Step 1: Drop the headliner, etc. making the sunroof assembly accessible

Step 2: Drop the sunroof assembly down, along with the motor

Step 3: Manually close the sunroof by hand since the motor and all is out

Step 4: Re-install the sunroof assemble and motor

Step 5: Press the sunroof switch to place the sunroof in the "UP" vent position.

Step 6: Once all of this is done, the synchronization is done and the sunroof should open and close properly

 

Again, can you confirm that this is correct? If so, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this! I've been searching for days and even already replaced the $53 switch from the dealer.

Mrs. Cusser's 2005 GMC Yukon XL Denali. Sunroof opened by itself twice while she was driving, compounding the issue of the sunroof sometimes not wanting to close (no sound of struggling, no whirring). Our mechanic said this was specialized, take to dealer, so we did.

 

Dealer called and said it needed new switch, would be like $200. I asked if this was a fix or a guess, they said a fix, so I asked for them to save the old switchfor me.

 

When we went to pick up, $50 was tacked on for "hazardous materials disposal". I asked what was disposed of, and they took that charge off. They also said I needed a new lower radiator hose, funny because I had replaced that 1 month earlier when I replaced the water pump; still had the "Gates" sticker and the aftermarket hose clamp readily visible too.

 

Anyway, 1.5 days later sunroof again would not close. Anyway, over a period of a few months Yukon was back there several times (no additional charge) and service department finally threw in the towel and stated they "had no idea" how to fix it. I asked for a refund, and they balked. But I had posted on an Internet board asking if anyone else ever had this issue, and a GM rep picked up the thread and PM'd me, finally facilitated a refund (so i didn't have to fight through my credit card company). But what a hassle.

 

The sunroof? I took out the fuse, can't risk the sunroof being stuck open if it rains, will ruin the interior.
