2002 Chevy 2500hd 8.1 Eats Up Oil?

Hey Guys,

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD with the 8.1L engine. I changed the oil about 2 weeks ago. I put in 6.5 quarts.

Yesterday, the "Check Engine Oil" light came on. When I went to check the engine oil, it was dry. I had to put in another 1.5 quarts of oil! I do not see any leaks on the ground. The truck burns clean, there is no white or black smoke coming out of the exhaust. Does this truck eat up oil?

Thanks.

The 8.1 will use about a Quart every 1,500 miles or so, possibly more when worked. Some may use more or less, just keep checking it if you think it is running properly.

Thanks for the information. This makes me feel better. I was under the truckk looking for a leak and there was nothing, it had me baffled.

Can anybody explain why the truck would eat this much oil? Where is it going?

How many miles did you drive in those 2 weeks.

I'm glad these trucks have engine oil level warning lights. I've used mine.

my dad's 05 GMC 8.1 does the same thing but he never drives the truck so I don't know when he checks it. the truck is just used to pull the trailers a few times a year.

Mine used to burn a quart every 1000, but ever since i switched to synthetic it's a quart every 3K.

Isn't there a TSB for the intake manifold bolts causing oil consumption ?

Newer style bolt was offered by GM. Ask your dealer to look up the TSB.

xtmsports, a friend of mine has a truck like yours and had the same problem. A couple years ago I did a search on the Internet and found that there is a pipe (similar to PCV valve) under the intake manifold that is so long that it is very close to the oil in the intake valley and under high/steady revs and oil flow the oil is sucked into the pipe and ultimately gets burned in the combustion chamber. He took his truck to the dealer, showed them the paper I printed describing the problem and they removed the manifold, tack welded a "U" shaped tube onto the pipe to get the opening away from the oil and his oil consumption is pretty much gone. I just looked briefly on the internet and didn't come up with the same file, but if you need I'll try to find it on my other computer. We just changed computers and I hope everything transferred over.

I hope this helps.

Lynn
