Chirp/cricket Sound...

Yesterday I was driving home and out of the blue I hear a cricket chirping noise. This started happening half way home on the highway. When i got off the highway it stopped. Thought it might be a fluke and didnt think about it anymore. However, this morning, 5 mins after driving on the highway above 60mph, the chirping came back. What is this!?

OK, to describe the sound better...it is loud, not a faint noise. It has no rhythm and is not gear specific or rpm specific. The only defining characteristic of the sound is that it only happens above 60 mph. Just imagine a cricket sitting next to you in the truck and thats what it sounds like (the best way i can say it). I also cannot tell where its coming from...at one time i thought it was right behind me, but now i think its infront of me. and its not the common PS pump problem - i have that and they are nothing alike. not saying its not the PS pump making the noise, just that this sound not a faint whistle, but a loud chirp.

What could this be...this is a sound I cannot learn to ignore and I would like to have a starting place for the dealer when i take it in - you know how they are about sounds, just can't locate it.

It's probably a loose body panel inside somewhere. Try pinpointing where the sound is coming from, then hold your hand on that spot to see if it stops. Mine has a couple of problem spots but only when it's cold outside. For example, one is the dash next to the front pillar. I've also heard that the seatbelts in the NBS trucks are known to squeek but I haven't experienced that one.

maybe, but it sounds a little more outside the cab. sometime today I will get my girlfriend to drive and I will hunt for the sound.

i did have my serp belt changed two weeks ago. the PS pump pulley was off allignment and the belt way fraying. just an FYI, but didnt do anything for 2 weeks.

My guess would be the passenger seatbelt. Try buckling it up while you are driving and see if it goes away?

really? what could be making the noise? the seat belt hanger or the buckle?

try not driving at dusk or dawn! :jester:

Sounds like it could be something belt related...mine does this every now and then I know that it is the belt.....we had a Yukon XL where I worked, but I can't remember how they fixed it...I thought something about having to shim one of the pullies, or something...

Well i drove home from work (30 min drive) never did it. go figure, but i am sure it will be back if its a real problem. ill keep my ears open.

My Denali has the same sound, similar to a cricket or a light bulb with the filiment rattling around inside of it. I've taken it to the dealer but they said it needs to get louder or worse for them to find the cuase. As soon as it gets nice out i'm going to take the belt off and see if I can find it. I'm guessing a bearing in the alternator or power steering pump. I know it's belt and pulley realted though.

And what time of day was that?

about 1 pm, why? what are you getting at?

Crickets are usually active at dawn and at dusk - less so in the middle of the day.
