Rims Flaking Chrome

I noticed that my 20 inch chrome GM rims are flaking around the lugs on more than one. I clean them and wax all winter but I guess the salt is too much for them. I m at the dealer tomorrow for something else so I will see what they say.

I too had chipping/flaking on one of the wheel on my 3 month old Denali. Went to the dealer last night and they are replacing with no questions asked. Hopefully you will have similar luck. I wouldn't be surprised if they give you the old "can't warranty road damage" bs. Mine was chipping at the rim next to the tire, not near the lugs. I too waxed mine before winter to try and keep the damage down.

 

Best policy would be to have a spare set of winter wheels to keep the nice ones off the winter roads. I'm not sure I'll ever do that though.

Mine are a year old and have over 10K on them, not that it matters but $$hit happens. If these things keep up Ill trade in for something else and it won t be GM.

i know a guy why had the same problem... went to the dealership and they blamed it on why ever took off the lugs '' banged'' the wheel and cracked the clear coat..... would not cover it!

GM has had this problem for several years now. It's a disgrace that they have yet to fix the problem. Keep an eye on your rims fellas!

Seems that the material used on the 20" wheels is not that great, thats pretty unfortunate, but as long as GM keeps replacing them

Have your wheels ever been removed and replaced before this happens? If not I would be quite upset also. But I think all this stems from the fact that the chrome plating is over aluminum, which is softer than the chrome plating. It's a lot like the chocolate on the outside of a soft ice cream cone - the substrate is too soft allowing the plating to deflect too much and crack. I don't know that this is a quality issue as much as it is just plain poor design. I am not sure that plating could ever be thickened sufficiently to keep it from cracking.

 

If OTOH the cracking is on the bead rim, then it might be from scoring from tire tools.

 

Or, it could be from too-thin plating or improper clearcoating also.

 

But, it doesn't matter what aluminum rim you have, road salt will kill it. And no amount of clearcoat will help - it always chips someplace.
