Anyone Run Cooper Discoverer H/t Tires?

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure the best place to put this post, but am curious if anyone here has run Cooper Discoverer tires? They are not sold on tire rack so I can't seem to find any good comparisons out there as to how they rank against other more commonly used tires.

Any thoughts appreciated. There is a set of 4 advertised locally in my classifieds in my size and load range E that I require, says paid $566, selling for $400, so I am considering them.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have already done that and should have mentioned it in my first post. There is nothing to be found.

I can't comment on them with regards to your exact situation but I replaced my Goodyear Wranglers with Cooper Discovery's on my Jeep Wrangler. They were much better and about 33% cheaper.

Not sure why you don't see them much in the Northeast. I used to live in Southern Ontario and it seemed like the Cooper was the replacement tire for light duty trucks. They were everywhere (this is going back 10 years though). My dad still runs them on his F150 and likes them.

I'd check the costs of having someone put them on and balance. You may get shafted a bit as your not buying them from the dealer.

I paid $400 installed on the Wrangler with $20 going for disposal of the old ones. Obvioulsy not the same size or rating.

Basically no one really knows of Coopers so nobody goes looking for them. They don't advertise. They seem to be on commercial vehicles more than anything.

They used to be sold on tirerack.com but they no longer carry them so I can't seem to find any reliable reviews or opinions. The only review is on the Copper site and I wasn't impressed with the handling or the wet traction ratings they list themselves.

Those that are curious and check for themselves and see what I mean at coopertires.com. I may just pull the trigger on them since the truck needs inspected this month, surely the original Firestone Steeltex's won't pass and I am short on funds right now, so I can't really afford the $900+ tires I was hoping to get like Michelin LTX M/S or even Bridgestone Revos or the like. These should be fine for the kind of driving I do and hopefully I'll be in a better position the next go around to get what I want.

Thanks guys!

I've run a couple sets on my 94 Suburban. Very long life. 75,000 miles on each set. I use them as my towing tires (E load range.) They have good straight line steering feel (good center rib) and mine are good in the wet and snow (four star out of five), but consider I use the 215/85/16s so they have a small footprint which helps on both counts. Anyhow, I've always had good results from Coopers and Mickey Thompson (owned by Cooper.)

Cooper's are EVERYWHERE around here. H/T's came on my truck when I bought it, and IMO they are good strictly as a highway tire. They ride very smooth and are very quiet, and have decent handling. They seem to wear normally and very evenly. However, their wet and offroad traction SUCKS. I haven't ever really lost control of the truck, but there have been a few times when the rear end broke lose around corners on accident.

I'm planning on buying some new all-terrain tires soon, most likely either Cooper Discoverer ATR's or Toyo Open Country's.

I put the HT's on my wifes Trailblazer. They are much better in the snow and slush than the BFG tires that came on it. They are also wearing better. My dad runs them on his HD towing a very large 5th wheel trailer. He said they perform better than the Goodyear RTS tires he usually runs, but are wearing slightly faster.

He's probably on his second set of those tires.

Three year old thread.

Don't worry about it :(

I am getting ready to install my second set of Cooper Discoverer H/T tires on my 2002 Silverado 2500 HD. I will be checking my mileages later, but I can't have more than 40,000 miles on them. I just had my second buldge appear in the Tread area, causing an out of round tire. Maybe a broken belt. I purchased these tires in 2008 and I only travel on average a little over 5,000 miles a year, so I would have expected a few more years out of the set. I just replaced the other tire about a month ago, so that is why I opted to put on the other 3 new as well. Hopefully this set performs better.

I have the H/T Plus on my 20's and have gone a year and a half with them and I drive about 20k a year. Looks like I will have to replace before this year is over.
