Sonoma Rusting To Death

Recommended Posts

Posted

My poor Sonoma is rusting all over. They are small rust spots near the rocker panels just under the doors. Theres also one spot that the rust ate though and created a hole.

How difficult is it to fix rust and are there any good guides here or online to help me out? I've tried searching but I'm not finding anything very helpful.

I have a mig welder that can weld sheet metal and I have a grinder with cut off discs. Is this a job I should even attempt to handle myself?

Thanks

You may as well try to do it yourself. Having it done professionally might cost an unproportional amount to what the truck is worth. As with anything you do yourself, you learn a great deal.

Look around for some southern parts. Don't repair the box, get a southern one. The also make a bunch of sheet metal parts that you can patch in also. Just my opinion.

If you can get to both sides of the metal, use POR15. This is a air tight/rock hard paint that you can brush on. Takes two coats, about one hour apart. Note: surfaces exposed to sunlight need top coat (besides the POR15).

I just bought a 94 Sonoma with some rust and plan on coating the entire underside with POR15. Clear coat after I replace the brake and fuel lines. My previous truck/s had box frames...you couldn't paint the inside. I plan on replacing the tailgate (major rust) and painting the inside of the new tailgate. I even painted the inside of a thickly chromed rear bumper on my old truck...it does make a difference (in Iowa/Illinois).

The bad thing about POR15 is you have 5 minutes to get it off you, after that it takes a razor blade or sand paper!

High humidity makes it 'cure' faster too.
