Bluetooth Options For 2008 Silverado

Again proving it's not a technical issue making this hard, it's a policy.

I disagree. I still think it IS a technical issue, and the real problem is that the workaround simply isn't well known to the members of the technical team. It's luck of the draw if you get a representative that can successfully make it work or not. If this were a policy driven issue, they wouldn't even be willing to try doing anything once they realized what was going on.

I don't understand why many people around here are so quick to diss GM and its subsidiaries for "bad business practices and policies" when something technical isn't simple to deal with. They're not trying to screw people, they're just not used to dealing with folks using their parts and systems in ways they weren't designed to be used in.

Honestly, I truly hope your right and Im wrong.

After installation I posted this:

I pressed the OnStar button and of course they answered using the wrong name. I told them I performed a hardware swap and needed to update their system with new OnStar module station ID number. They said I had to take it to the dealer first so they could run it through the "TIS2" web program. Then I could call them back to move my service to the new module.

Post after the first dealer attempt:

Just wanted to let everyone know....the dealer could not update my new OnStar module. I stood there and watched the tech run the TIS2Web program with the TechII connected. At the final step he kept receiving an error telling him to use the the J????? legacy diagnostic tool. He tried it that way as well but it still did not work. He confirmed that he has done swaps before without issue. I guess it will work if you are replacing with a new module that hasn't been programmed for another vehicle. I will try to take it to another dealer to get a "second opinion".

Post after going to the dealer a second time:

Yeah, mine was from another vehicle. A blue 2009 Silverado Crew Cab to be precise. It also has an active OnStar account on it. I took it to another dealer who was able to program it but when I contacted OnStar they could not do their part....... banghead.gif

Note:

• It is critical to use the service replacement Communication Interface Module (CIM) only in the vehicle for which it was ordered.

• Failure to perform the following procedures will result in a red LED, DTC(s) being set, and limited or incomplete OnStar® services

• An OnStar® button-press to the OnStar® call center is not required to complete the procedure.

• It may take up to 24 hours for OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the procedures.

• Perform the following procedure only once. Repeat attempts of the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process.

Connect the scan tool to the vehicle.

Connect the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal to the scan tool.

Select the CIM Communication Interface Module Set-up and perform the set-up procedure.

Select the ONSA TIS2WEB Pass-Thru OnStar® Activation (Replaced/Upgraded Units Only) option using the service programming system (SPS).

The default language for the new CIM is English. To change the language to French or Spanish, access the scan tool.

Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated.

Post after reading Brewboy's post:

Hell, I haven't tried it since the day I left the dealer. I'll try it tomorrow morning to see if it has the correct vehicle.

Post after trying it later the next day:

My OnStar works!!!!! I tried it when I first left the dealer and it did not work so I thought it was a no go. Then I read the post that it might take a while to process so I tried it again this morning and BINGO. Everything works now. Bluetooth, OnStar, and voice dialing to my Blackberry.

Ray, you still haven't answered the explicit question:

When you press the blue button, what does OnStar identify your vehicle as? A 2007 Sierra Denali? Or a 2009 Silverado?

According to GMSPO, ONSA must be run using the J2534 (aka MDI -- "Multiple Diagnostic Interface"), not the Tech-2 Legacy Pass-through. The legacy unit was apparently only useful on analog OnStar vehicles, not digital ones like the current modules.

Your right, thats exactly what happened when the tech did the ONSA TIS2WEB set up to my truck. Tech2 tool didnt work and then he got out the blue MDI J2534 tool and ran it again and it worked.

This is interesting news............

Now THAT, I'm fairly certain, will never be something we'll be able to integrate into GMT900s.

Based on some reading I was doing on another forum, I wouldn't expect this to come with any blatant Google branding in the way that Microsoft's branding is all over Ford Sync equipped vehicles.

I'll go grab a sound clip of me pressing the button in my truck. To be honest I have not touched it since that day.

Yesterday I had a message from Onstar on my home answering machine that "the vehicle has the wrong info in it" and they think I can resolve the problem by taking it to the dealer and telling them that "Onstar tech service says the wrong software is in the vehicle and the dealer needs to correct it. Have the dealer call Onstar and reference case # ___ for help."

I've emailed Chris White for advice on this one. I'm afraid that if I take it to the dealer and they contact Onstar, they will overwrite Chris' programming which will result in a red Onstar light and still no functioning Onstar.

Make sure you include the OnStar advisor asking you how your 07 Sierra Denali is in that clip.

I really don't care that your truck can connect to OnStar, because mine can too. I care whether or not OnStar knows what your vehicle is without you having to tell them, and when you use OnStar's hands-free phone feature that it is working properly.

Still waiting for you to answer the question I've now asked at least 3 times.... :(

We're not saying we don't believe you, we're just asking you to give us a straight answer to a fairly simple question. I'm not trying to be rude/mean, I just want you to be 100% clear about what you mean when you say that everything is working so that everyone is aware of what can and cannot be achieved as a realistic end goal.

Basically the only things the dealer can do on their end are to try reprogramming the VCIM with their Tech2 (which Chris told me NOT to let them do) and running ONSA using the J2534/MDI... which Chris said wouldn't affect the programming he did.

So I really don't think there's much to worry about as long as you get them to let you watch the tech work and keep him from doing anything with the Tech2.

Ok, here's the link. YouTube

When I try to zoom on the phone it is showing the Bluetooth connecting to General Motors. I hope this video answers your question.

OK.... that's very interesting. Now why can't the rest of us be so lucky to get in touch with people who know what they're doing?!

Sounds like it is almost there.. I say almost as the On* rep was trying to push an update and it would not let her. Why? So you get email diagnostics and do they show the correct information? Not questioning you but I think for myself and the rest of the forum we are looking for a final answer to this saga so we can wrap up the procedure in one quick and easy posting for future use.
