If you live in the Houston area, Eddie in the parts dept. at Bill Heard Chevrolet will match internet prices (plus what it would cost for S/H). Just bring in a printed invoice of what it would cost you from an online parts store. One advantage from buying from my local dealer is that if the part is not in stock, he can have it in a day or two. Another advantage is that if it's not the correct part, they will exchange it for the correct part. If you do not live in the Houston area, ask your local dealer if he will match internet prices. It doesn't hurt to ask. A third option is www.gmpartsdirect.com. As lurbud06 mentioned, their price is around $135.00, that's about $165.00 to your door. The problem I have with gmpartsdirect is that most of their parts are non returnable or exchangeable parts. Either way, sure beats paying MSRP.

I may be able to steer you in the right direction for the part number, but I cannot guarantee it is the correct part for your truck. Please double check with a parts person before ordering. The part number is listed at www.gmpartsdirect.com under 2007 Chevy trucks. Your profile shows you are driving a Sierra, but use the drilldown for the 2007 Chevrolet. It has the most complete drilldown list. Don't worry, I drive a GMC, but I ordered my console through a Chevy dealer.

Interesting. I have a 2007 NBS 2500HD and following the similar menu they have an option for: Garage dr opener - Front, w/garage door opener - Front, w/garage door opener for $84.54. Since I have no rear window but the roof lights option, I wonder if you can 'add' the garage door opener but carefully cutting out the plastic?

The wiring harness is different. The new console's wiring harness has an extra plug for the transmitter. I don't think GM sells the wiring harness separately. Same problem several members on this board had with the steering wheel mounted audio control upgrade, all parts were sold separately except for the harness.

Floyd won't sell me the part unless I give him the VIN of a truck that already has it, not my VIN ? I don't know about you but I don't have a lot full of 08 LTZ's to go get VIN numbers from, LOL. So I think I will be doing business elsewhere. Any idea where else I could order this ? There only difference is mine has the switch for the power rear window. Thanks in advance !!

Asking for the VIN is SOP. You should try introducing yourself to the board and then asking if anyone would lend you their VIN. That's what I did and I now have mine installed and working just fine. I don't have the rear sliding glass but finding someone here with your setup should not be too hard. You just have to ask.

Installing the GM Universal Home remote is pretty simple. Installation time took about twenty minutes. If anyone else has been considering installing the remote, the following information and pictures may be helpful.

 

1. This information pertains to 07 and 08 NBS half ton Silverado's and Sierras only. It may also apply to 2500 and 3500 NBS trucks.

 

2. Before ordering the GM Universal Home Remote transmitter, go to www.learcar2u.com or call 1-866-572-2728 and check if this unit is compatible with your current garage door opener or other devices.

 

3. The GM part number for my 08 Sierra is 25848609. Final cost was $169.63. If your truck has a sunroof and /or a sliding glass rear window, your part number will be different. Please consult with a parts person before ordering for the correct part number /console for your truck.

 

4. The new overhead console comes in only one color, regardless of what interior color your NBS truck has, (Cashmere, Titanium or Ebony). All headliners in both the Silverado's and Sierras are the same color. GM calls it gray, but it looks more beige to me. The color of the overhead console matches the headliner.

 

5. The new overhead console with the UHR comes as a complete unit. It includes the console, three button transmitter, light bulb, lens and microphone for the OnStar system. It does not include the passenger air bag indicator light. You will have to swap this out from your old unit.

 

6. The Universal Home Remote is plug_and_play. You do not have to flash or program the BMC, but you will have to program the transmitter for each garage door opener. Information on programming can be found in your owner's manual or by calling 1-866-572-2728.

 

7. The Universal Home Remote can be programmed for up to three devices. It can be programmed for both fixed and rolling codes. Most garage door openers made before 1996 use a fixed code, those made after 1996 use a rolling code. Currently, mine is programmed for one fixed code garage door opener and one rolling code garage door opener.

 

8. Another consideration before installing the GM UHR is that it is continuously energized, even when the truck is turned off and the key is removed from the ignition. Personally, I wish that the remote would not operate when the truck is turned off and the key is removed. Reason being is that I park my truck in the driveway. If someone were to break into my truck and knew how to operate the transmitter, they would have access into my garage/house.

 

9. The UHR has six LED's. One on each button and one in front of each button. These LED's are very dim, even at night. You will not be able to see them lit during daylight hours. You need to see them blinking when you are programming the transmitter, especially on a fixed code garage door opener. When programming, wait until dark or park inside a closed garage with your engine turned off.

 

Removing and installing the overhead console is pretty simple. The console is secured to the roof by four metal clips that are inserted into metal slots on the cab roof. Each clip is located near the corner of the console. I have removed the console twice. The first time was prior to ordering the console to see how it was secured to the roof. The first removal went fairly smoothly without breaking anything. The second time I removed the console, (after my part came in) I broke a plastic tab that holds the metal clip. (See pic) I am not sure why it broke the second time because I removed it excactly like I did the first time. No big deal because this is on the old console.

 

Theoretically, you should be able to remove the console by pulling straight down on it, one side at a time. I pulled on the console to the point that I thought it would break something, so I used an alternative method of removing the console. First, I removed the light bulb lens by prying it out with my fingernails. A small screwdriver or knife can be used, but it may scratch your console. Next, remove the two torx screws located under the lens. The torx screws secure the backend of the console to a plastic bracket. The plastic bracket is secured to roof by the metal clips. With the torx screws removed, the back end of the console is now loose. You can now pull the backend down enough to see the location of the front two metal clips. Pull straight down near the front to release the front two clips. The overhead console is now free. Disconnect the power plug. Unplug and swap out the Passenger Air Bag indicator. If you removed the torx screws earlier, the black plastic bracket will still be attached to the roof. Remove the plastic bracket from the new console and use your old one. To install, plug main electrical connector back in and snap console into place. Follow instructions in owner's manual on how to program the transmitter. If you have problems programming the transmitter, call the aforementioned phone number. They will assist you.

 

Programming on a rolling code garage door opener is easy. Just press the "learn" button on the garage door opener then press any button on the UHR within 30 seconds. Programming the second garage door opener that uses a fixed code with dip switches was a lot more time consuming and frustrating. It took me over an hour to get it to work.

 

Again, to anyone considering installing the Universal Home Remote, I hope that you find this information helpful. It took me a lot longer to write this stuff down than it did to install the remote.

EXCELLENT WRITE UP JIM!!! I work at a salvage yard in North Texas and was able to rob the overhead console from one of our vehicles here, and followed your instructions. It was fast and easy, works like a charm. Settings are saved even after you turn the vehicle off. Looks just like it was made that way. Here's your next challenge Jim. If I put factory fog lights in my truck, is there a way to wire it up into my factory harness??
