XP Service Pack 3 is out and my Windows Update keeps asking me to download and intstall it. Have any of you done it? Is there any benefit to it? Any help would be great. I'm not sure if I need to do it or not.

The only service pack 3 I can find available is for Office XP. So I dunno. i downloaded IE 8 beta and Im not overly impressed with it. If I could find SP 3 for windows I would be the guinea pig but I don't seem to see it available.

Edit - Found it on microsoft website, but not on microsoft update. I guess I'll have to look into it more when I get back home on Monday.

If you go to windows update in XP it pops up now. Im not going to do it until I know more.

I haven't really noticed it. My computer is set up to receive and install crirical and security updates automatically, so I don't go to the download page much. Besides, I'm happy with sp2 and ie7.

I downloaded it this morning without any issues or troubles. Everything seems to be in order. I don't notice any major changes.

I tested it with a few XP systems earlier this week, also no issues. It's basically just a bunch of security updates and hotfixes though. I'll be pushing it to the rest of the XP systems on my personal network later, so we'll see if anything blows up. :lol:

You can also download it here if you want to install it on multiple systems or don't want to use Windows Update.

So the IE8 beta version I had wouldn't locate it on windows update. As soon as I went back to IE 7 found it right away and I am currently installing it. I'll see soon how it turns out.

Downloaded it about a week ago. The only issue I have is that it won't load up D Link wireless manager, other than that it's fine.

A quick followup note on my previous concerns over SP3. It seems to be prebuilt Hewlett Packard computers with AMD processors that are getting stuck. Everything else is going pretty good, so if you don't have an HP computer that came with Windows XP preinstalled, you should be good to go with it.

I used the XP SP3 Beta for a few months. All of a sudden the new version of Remote Desktop Connection stopped working and I got an error message saying that the trial version was over and I needed to download a new version. Of course, a new version was not available (great planning on Microsofts part) and I had to scrap SP3 to get it working again.

I just noticed that the computer I am using now has reinstalled SP3 on its own (and the new version of RDC is working). My other computers apparently have not downloaded it yet.

To be honest, SP3 really doesn't make any difference. You either have enough RAM and processor to run everything at once or you don't.

Mine;

Desktop: P4 3.0, 1.25g DDR, XP Pro SP3 - boots slow (too many programs run on startup, otherwise works fine)

IBM Laptop: P4 1.8, 1G DDR, XP Pro SP2 - boots fast (minimal programs)

Desktop: C2D 2.4, 4G DDR2, XP Pro SP2 - boots fast (many programs, antivirus update is complete before I'm done typing in my password, pretty much doesn't matter how much is running at once )

Spare;

Avaratec Laptop: AMD 2200+, 1G DDR, XP Home SP2 - boots slow (is total POS and bogs down all the time, basically good as a paperweight)

Desktop: P3 500, 512mb PC133, XP Pro SP2 - boots OK but can't run too much without bogging down (no antivirus protection, internet access, or updates)
