Installing Ecm Module 97 6.5 Diesel Silverado 1 Ton

I could use some help on the topic of ecm installation, is there any thing I can do from freaking screwing things up since I not that knowledgeable with electrics. The ecm that I going to order from the parts house will be calibrated to my truck, from that point on I'm in the dark, and can not find much on the web to help. some where in this life I was told that you could short the unit out rendering it useless, FACT OR FICTION?

 

The chevy dealer wants $550 to replace the part, parts house cost is $110 to $190 considerable savings If I can keep from messing up, so any input will be appreciated.

All you have to do is have ign. off unhook battery cable & exchange the PCM's. Whats wrong with it current PCM?

I have the same truck and i am having a hard time finding anything on this truck and its ECM. For one- where is the ECM located and is it often that these truck have problems with there ECM.
