well, i know they stopped making them a while ago, but if any body has one, knows who has one, wouldn`t mind parting with it i`m interested. and i wouldn`t mind even just talking about this system, (for the vortec 454 specifically) knowing any problems, tricks or things to know about it in general, any insite would be greatly appreciated :uhoh::lol:

What about a turbo, like STS turbo system? You cut off your muffler and put the turbo assembly there. Run tubing up the the engine and that acts as your intercooler. Then run some oil lines back to it and add an inline pump. You would probably have to contact them. I know they would have done one 454 in 5 years time, so it might be worth it. They range from $2000 to $3000 and are capable of 15 psi and got an award from GM so its not too bad of a system.

Squires Turbo System - Universal Kit

yeah, been kinda weary ofa turbo system, was looking for bottom end tourque, although alot of people are saying you don`t get much lag with em (turbo), so i guess i should price it out, that price sounds reasonable, do they have there own program? or does it come with a programmed ecm? well i`ll fire them an e-mail and see what they have done to a 454...

I'm not exactly sure. The computer should be able to adapt to the turbo. They said that my 350 stock computer could learn to be a 383. I figure that it could do the same thing for a turbo until you get it tuned.

so roughly $5000 without meth injection intercooler and other little necessities, plus its a universal kit so it would require R&D installation . Not saying i`d go that extreme(intercooled etc) but for towing i may be forced to, i have a buddy that is on the same route i`m in, looking to artificially aspirate his 98 454 CC dually, well i guess i got to start saving, so maybe next year, i think i`ll let him do it first so i can watch and learn, plus i won`t be out a truck if it grenades!! should do it right and build a long block and trans up too...

Well from what I understand you don't need the intercooler. You will be fine with just the aluminum tubing up to the intake for cool air. The intercooler was more for the little cars that want balls to the wall performance. And also I have seen/read that the lag is very minimal for being so far away from the engine. And you wouldn't really need that much R&D. All you need to do is (in a nutshell) cut out the muffler, weld in the turbo, route the piping up to the engine, setup the exhaust with the blow off valves, run the oil lines and oil pump, and then watch the gas gauge fly. :D If I had had the money and time I would have done it to my 98 350. Did you get an email back from them yet?

i did get an e-mail back from STS, it seemed kinda generic, basically saying there isn`t a bolt on kit made for my truck, but that the universal kit will work, its cool they got some award from GM for their system, do you kn ow how the oiling system works? you said you need a pump? is it a closed system or does it tie into the engine somehow? i`ve seen some cool vids on you-tube but all the turbos sound kinda sick like bad bearings, but the trucks sure go! theres quite a few vids with a turboed 8.1l!

I also wonder how the fuel system can keep up with the air coming in? i understand that it will try with the MAF, but can it keep up? it wouldn`t be hard to run a adjustable vacuum reg to adjust my fuel pressure, i was gonna rig something soon anyways just to play with increased pressure...

Its tied to the engine. You tap into the pan and pump it back to the turbo. You should get the Horsepower TV or Trucks! episode. Thats where I learned about them. I think you can get them on STS's site or from the Powerblock site. I'm not sure about bad bearings because they are using Garrett turbos the same kind on the Dmax's. The fuel system keeps up when you get the engine tuned. The stock computer can learn to up the fuel but it would be better to get it tuned so that it know exactly what to do with the turbo on.

i must have missed that episode of POWERBLOCK, but maybe i can get that episode on dvd, hmmm, i can for-see leaks with tapping into the pan, it may be feesable to tap into pressure supply and run it to the turbo( if i filter it), not sure were i can return it to, but i could learn more form the episode, or from sts directly, ah when the time comes i`ll be knowledged enough to figure it out, i work on alot of industrial (non diesel) turbo charged engines and i could use that to develope a "working" ideal on the sytem... :D

Well let me know it turns out. I am really interested in how it will perform. Good luck.

STS is actually a reputable company in the LS-X community. They make big power and are much more efficient than superchargers, both in power made/fuel mileage, as they do not "take power to make power". Turbo is definately the way to go imo.

thanks, yeah they are well praised, i`ve pretty much made up my mind this is the way to go, turbo would sound so cool on my big block!!
