Fan Speed Switch And A/c?

On my 2000 rcsb silverado I'm having a/c problems and this time of the year I'd like to get it fixed asap. The fan speed switch only works on the number 5 speed. My guess would be its jsut the switch in the dash. What do you guys thinks? If it is, is that a part you can only get from a dealer/salvage yard or a local auto parts store by chance?

Also, my a/c does not blow cold at all. I looked under the hood and at the condensor I believe its called has a plug in and then there is a plug in dangling buy it. It is also missing both the caps the cover where they fill the system or what not. So, someone has apparently messed with it. Is there a chance just getting a shop to fill it back up will correct this? Or am I looking at something bigger?

Sorry for lack of technical terms never dealt with them a whole lot. All the cars I've owned before either didn't have it and wasn't worth looking into or had it and never had any issues.

The fact that the schrader caps that cover the test/fill points are missing and the general state of dissarray, I would highly recommend a professional look the system over. There is no telling what an amateur has done up to the is point. The missing fan speeds are probably due to blown resistors, a simple fix that a real technician can handle along with the more technical mysteries you've outlined.

Does the local quicklube count as a professional? I know a few gujys that work there and they always seem to know their stuff. They only let the good ones touch like that. lol. Or would I be better of going to a dealer?

Good a/c techs are all around, if you trust the quicklube guy and they're reasonable there's nothing so unique about a GM a/c that any qualified tech wouldn't know about. The main thing is diagnosing without causing additional problems and fixing the real problems without wasting money.

Your fan speed problem is more than likely a bad blower fan resistor board. It is located in the duct under the dash right by the fan.

The A/C not getting cold is probably low freon. You whould have the system checked out for leaks and then a re-charge.

Is there anyway to know for sure if that resistor board is bad? Can someone post a pic of where its located?

I'll make an appointment out there hopefully I'll get it in this week.

These are the directions I followed to replace mine. Pretty simple. If you take out the old one it's pretty clear if it's bad.

I got the a/c took care of today along with a tranny leak and squeaky pulley. Now that I got the part numbers and the how to I just need to pick up the part.
