Hypertech Max Energy

Some of you may have read my post under the Performance section concening my times with the Max Energy.

I have now run two fill ups with the Max Energy in place and I had said I was going to wait until I had 4 or more before I said anything about the MPG. However, I just can't help it. Gaining MPG is like getting a really good bargain on something, you just have to tell someone.

I fully realize these 2 fill ups cannot be taken as a "real average" but the #s have surprised me.

Here are what I have so far:

The first fill up consisted of 156 miles which was almost all highway at 65 MPH or less. Only a couple of stops were made on this run. It used 5.98 gals which equates to 26.08 MPG

The second fill up was this weekend and it was on 133 miles consisting of mostly highway driving at 65 or less with about 20 to 25 miles of this being around town. This 20 to 25 miles was not really what you would call "city driving" but certainly not "highway" either. It used 5.75 gals which equates to 23.13 MPG.

Same 93 Octane fuel, same tire PSI, same station and the same pump with he truck sitting level in the exact same position. I fill it until it is at the top of the neck, let it go down and do it again until it stays in the neck.

I know this sounds crazy for a 5,000+ Yukon XL with 4.10 gears but the #s are the #s. I hate to say it but I am anxious to drive it more to see what the average really comes out to be after 6 to 8 fill ups. Imagine that, anxious to burn more gas. :D

The only thing I question, and you didn't state it before, but what was your average cruising speed BEFORE this? Slowing down can net up to a 15% improvement.

You are right, I did not speak about our driving habits. You are correct concerning driving speeds helping tremendously. My work Van can vary from 22 to over 25 depending on my driving speeds.

This is my Wife's truck and she drives very conservatively, some would say like a little old lady but she is not quite that bad. She never drives over 55 on a 55 MPH speed limit road and will typically drive 65 to 67 on a 65 MPH road or the Interstate. She almost always has the kids with her so she is really a very good driver and very conservative.

She does know the tune has been installed because she caught me doing it. I was not going to tell her so as to not influence her driving habits. I told her it was to help with the towing and it might help our MPGs a little. The fact is, I do not think she could alter her driving style to be any more conservative than what it already is.

I keep very good MPG records on the truck. Not sure why, just something I have always done.

Here are our the # on the last 6 fill ups prior to the tune being installed. The two best ones were almost all highway. The lowest one was almost all around town and very short trips. I also omitted one of the last 6 becauase it was with my 6500 lb camper behind it. I do not include these # in my avearges. It was 10.71 just in case anyone was wondering.

19.11

15.85

17.47

18.38

20.92

18.33

This would be an average of 18.34 which has been consistent since I installed the True Flow CAI well over 2 years ago. The average has been as high as 18.41 and as low as 17.92 depending on the driving conditions.

I will have my camper hooked up on July 3rd for the first time since installing the tune. We will see if it improves anything.

If you have not seen my post on the times under the Perf section, you will see that it did improve the performance slightly. However, 1/4 mile times is not why I bought the unit.

Nice little bonus though!

I'm still a little leary of tuning my truck. But the more of these threads I read, the more interested I am. :D

are we talking american gallons? :D

if it was as easy as a little tuning, don't you think GM would have figured out how to get 23-26 MPG in our rigs?

was there a strong tailwind?

where you drafting?

is your speedo accurate? did the hypertech change your tire size to make it seem like you're going more miles than you actually are? double check it with a GPS

I just can't believe that a V8, 2.5 ton, fullsize SUV, with 4.10 gears, can get that kind of Mileage. I'm not calling you a liar, but I'm the "I have to see it in person, to believe it" kind of guy. I'll be happy if I can ever see 20.

Wow, those are some pretty amazing numbers. Keep us updated on future fill-ups to see if your mileage truely averages out to be significantly higher.

For reference, i just came back from a road trip through the mountains and thought I did great till I saw your numbers. Keep in mind, my truck is an extended cab pickup with 3.42 gears...probably a bit lighter than your Yukon XL with 4.10s. I also bought a waitforme tune in which I insisted on the best tuning for mileage, not power. I probably averaged about 55-60 MPH and must admit that I had a 5-10 MPH tailwind probably 1/2 the trip and no wind for the rest. I drove 418.1 km = 259.8 miles and put in 41.1 L = 10.87 US gallons. This works out to 23.89 miles/US gallon. This was driving very conservatively and ALL highway miles.

If those great numbers keep up for you I may have to consider a swap.

you also have to account EPA restrictions on vehicles. new vehicle requirements by the EPA are WAY more strict than even we see with our smog checks here in california.

further, manufacturers arnt out for maximum mileage at any cost. want proof? 1988 honda crx HF got the same mileage that a 2008 prius gets...yes you read that right. 20 years of technology and the prius is just barely reaching the mileage we were able to get on a carburated vehicle. when it comes to vehicles, even trucks, horsepower sells

What octane are you using/filling up with?

I just got back Sunday from a trip to Overland Park, Kansas and with the speed limit at 70mph on Hwy 70 most of the way I had the cruise set on about 75mph and averaged 18.4mpg. I had the wife and 2 kids plus a suitcase each and running the a/c. There was a strong crosswind I fighted with the whole way also.

Yes US gallons.

No head wind or tail wind to speak of.

No drafting

Tire size on the Hypertech is stock and the tires on the truck are stock size. I do have a gps and will check it to be sure my speedo has not been altered but I don't think so.

My wife was driving part of this last run and I have to assume she was driving as she always does. I drove some and I was driving like I drive it anytime I am in it. I use cruise, speed was 65 or under and no hard acceleration. I also try to coast within reason when coming ot a stop or exit but I have always done this.

Give me a little time and I will refill it after a couple hundred miles and see what it does. She drove about 40 miles today and it was a lot of in town driving (shopping for Fathers Day). As I said, I have nothing to gain by exagerating the #s. They are what they are but remember, this is only 2 fill ups. If I can simply move my average from the mid 18s to mid 19s to low 20s I would be very happy.

2005LT, it is the Max Energy not the Econ.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
