Is there a way to 'shine' or clean off the cloudy appearance of my two taillights?

Worked as a fire fighter in a previous life. Check your local phone directory and look for a local public safety supplier --- every town/city seems to have at least one --- OR, stop by your local firehouse and ask them who the local vendor is for public safety equipment.

They used to sell compounds designed specifically to clean the plastics of the emergency light bars, as they suffered dearly from clouding, etc. --- due largly to their direct exposure to sunlight on the roofs of the vehicles.

My recollection is that that stufff works wonders, and leaves the plastics looking virtually brand new.

Other option: I use novus and mcguires products for my plastic motorcycle windscreen. This stuff is available at most good auto parts houses, or certainly at a local motorcycle dealer. They have various "grades" of these pastes that are designed to remove surface defects/scrathes and clouding at varying degrees of abrasiveness (term used in a relative sense).

I have had good luck with those as well.

My 99 Silverado got water vapor in the brake light. Small crack in it, water seeped in, and got hot. Wasn't real noticable at night as the lights were bright enough.

I'm sure you would know if it's steam, but it never hurts to ask. :(
