2000 Silverado Squeak?

I have been trying to find the source of my squeak on my 5.3 but have had no luck. The sound is better described as a slipping belt. I originally was told/thought it was the idler pulley so I replaced it. Still no change. It appears to be getting worse. Belt looks good although the a/c belt looks like it could be replaced so I'm trying to find time to get to that although I have my doubts that its the problem. The truck had a tranny leak when I bought it from the hard lines. Someone had not put on the rubber grommets. So, I think some tranny fluid could have soaked pulleys and belts. Leak has since been corrected. But, don't want to replace more than I have to solve the problem.

Is there a common issue with a squeaking noise coming from a pulley or belt on these motors? Whats the best way to track down the source?

Thanks in advance! I would greatly appreciate any and all help.

I spent months trying to get rid of a squeak. Idler pully wheel, tensioner, alternator (the bearings were bad), and a new belt and nothing fixed it. After about 3 months, I decided to go ahead and replace the A/C belt. I didn't think it was the problem, so I bought a shitty $15 belt at Pep Boys, and I've been squeak free for a year and a half.

It's not a hard job, and it's only about $25 bucks for a good belt, and chances are it needs to be replaced whether it's the squeaking one or not. I'd be willing to bet it's where your squeak is coming from though. Good luck :withstupid:

Yes, the AC belt I have found causes a lot of the belt squeaks. I would also replace the AC tensioner at the same time. The pivot has probably worn out and is causing the belt to squeak.

I bought that belt the other day just b/c it was 9 bucks! lol Any tips on replacing it? Looked like a pita but that was the same day I did a bunch of other maintenance on my truck so I was probably just wasn't in the mood. I'll give it a shot maybe tomorrow just depends how things go. I just got done replacing the blower motor resistor and I'm so glad I changed it myself instead of paying someone. This site has already helped me a ton.

Thanks all. I'll post back once I replace the belt to see if it cures it.

Well, got around to changing the belt. Turn it on and the squeak is still there. So, I tried the a/c tensioner since it seemed like it was a little loose. Still squeaking. So, I removed the a/c belt all together and tried it and no squeak. So, I think this only leaves the the compressor. I don't think they have a pulley you can just buy do they? Or am I looking at replacing the compressor which I'm guessing isn't very easy and the part is costly or living with the squeak since a/c works fine.

Any advice from here?

the service manual shows a procedure for replacing the clutch hub. I would check with your local parts store to be sure. If it was me, I would fix the noise as I HATE ANY ENGINE SQUEAKS.

+1.

+2 Thats one reason why I am glad I don't have the 98 anymore. Cab creaked like a son of gun. Thats what I get for having the 3rd door and trying to pound the crap out of it.

The hub clutch? Believe me I'm about as anal about my vehicle as anyone. But, I'd have to be 100% on a part fixing it before I'd dump more money into it. I just lost over 2k selling my last vehicle b/c it was foreign and I had to put in a motor to get it to sell which was not cheap.

Next time I'm at the parts store I'll check into.

Thanks,

Well, A/c wasn't working in truck when I bought and thought I had it fixed but now I have to replace the consensor I've been calling salavage yards and I get both fairly cheap so I might go ahead and do that.

The AC Belt Tensioner is around 30 or 40 bucks. I bought one with the $20 I had on my Autozone rewards card plus another twenty.

    • Hey everyone,   For anyone looking at roof-mounted lighting for the Hummer EV, we wanted to share our M&R Automotive 50" PRO Roof Light Bar for the 2022+ GMC Hummer EV.   The curved 50" bar sits close to the windshield rather than sticking way up above the roofline. The mounting position is designed to keep the setup relatively streamlined while minimizing wind noise and maintaining full use of the factory windshield wipers.   A few details:   50" curved PRO light bar Fits 2022–2026 GMC Hummer EV Spot + driving beam pattern TIR optics White main beam Amber DRL backglow Approximately 15,410 measured lumens through the lens Mounts to factory accessory locations No cutting or drilling required Wiring runs down the A-pillar toward the AUX connections Designed to minimize wind noise Lifetime warranty Off-road use only     The 50" is an interesting middle ground for anyone who wants the visibility and mounting position of a roof bar without stepping all the way up to the larger 60" setup. For the Hummer EV owners here, would you go with the 50" for the lower-profile look or step up to the full 60"?
    • My son got a hatchback withe the aero package for like 17k new. Great little car with amazing MPH
    • Yeah, I've given up years ago with that! I was able to load a few when I first joined the site sometime around '07. Then after maybe 20 pics, it said I exceeded the limit. Now every pic I try to post says I've "exceeded 1mb".   ONE MB??? That's Windows 95 ******, lol!!
    • I get the same results with pictures. Then I figure it out. Then I forget. Screw it.
    • I guess I'm the only one on this forum who can't get effing pics to load here! Do you have to resize them to post, or am I just blocked from uploads?   I have the same luck with automotive electronics ... but this is the ONLY site on the net that I have this problem!   I'd post pics of what I'm working on ... but I CAN'T! 🤬       Just fabbed up the kickdown cable (had to extend the cable mount WAAAY out from the throttle shaft to get a full pull), and parts arrived for the fuel lines on the 940 carb conversion project. Should be able to drive this thing by the end of the day. If not for work, I'd have had this thing done SIX weeks ago.   Got the jetting sorted out last week. Had a real bad tip-in bog that I couldn't seem to correct. Friggin float height was over 11mm too HIGH! eBay purchase, so no wonder everything is screwed up right out of the box! I ended up with a larger dual-squirt accelerator pump jet anyway instead of the single. Also moved the 70 primary idle jet (4 sizes too big out of the box) to the secondary idle circuit, and installed a 57 in the primary. Runs great on the fuel bottle!    Still using the computer for ignition. Going to drive it first and see if I want to go through the project of installing an intermediate shaft with a distributor drive gear, so I can install a block-mounted distributor and run points, 100% computer free. I should do that anyway just from a simplicity / reliability / tunability standpoint. The electronics left me stranded last year a couple times! I can't tweak the timing to my liking right now because of the computer. Tried twisting the cam-driven distributor already ... and the damned thing just reverts back to where it was! That's infuriating. But if it runs well enough I might save that for next season.   Just driving it in and out of the shop to work on other projects, it feels 1,000% more responsive with the carburetor. Also fires MUCH faster when cranking. Can't wait to drive it and see if I got more than 114 ponies, lolol.   Hopefully these don't go 404 like the last post ... https://postimg.cc/gallery/MjhrmZS   Seems like that site went back to dial-up internet! Maybe they'll fix that some day ...
