2007 W/6" Lift, 35's, And Tpms Issues

Hi Folks,

New to the forum. I have an 07' 1500 with a Superlift 6" lift, running 18's on 35" tires. In doing so, I'm sure the TPMS somehow needs to be reprogrammed to recognize 50psi instead of 30-35psi.

Is there any way to do this myself, or does GM need to hook it up to the calibration monitor?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey Nick~

I have similar issues with my '08 Denali. I put 35's on 20's on and am running about 45psi in the tires. My TPMS is all whacked out too. They ONLY way they work is if I take my tire pressure down to the recommended 30-35psi, but then the truck handles like crap.

I was just at my GM dealership asking them what I can do if anything because the DIC keeps flashing errors inmy face about Check Right Front Tire Pressure etc. The sevice tech told me that "legally" they CANNOT alter the computer encoding to recalibrate the TPMS for anything other than the factory recommended pressures. I guess it all stems from the tire blowout issues that Firestone had with Ford a coupel years ago that killed someone!?

His comment was "if someone was driving with a low tire, had a blowout, rolled their truck - and god-forbid got killed / severly injured...they could sue GM or the dealership that either disabled or altered the computer which didn't properly warn the driver of the potential hazards".

On the flip-side of that conversation...the service tech said that 3/4 tons have something like a 75-80psi rating on their TPMS for towing / pulling. And there have been complaints from a few 3/4 ton owners saying that when they are NOT pulling / towing they would liek to run a lower pressure in their tires so the truck doen't ride like a tank...but they get TPMS errors when they drop below 65psi!

Long story short...he said that it is all in the computer coding and he could alter it to my desired psi...but that he would have to do it and NOT tell anyone and he woudl deny ever doing it if I had issues! He told me that the next time I have it in for service work to let him know and he woudl go in and change the settigns to my specs but wouldn't be able to doument the change anywhere 9which I can totally understand).

As far as if you can do it yourself...I'm not 100% sure of that answer...but I'd have to guess NO. I think it requires a GM computer / analysis setup to modify the PCM etc.

My dealer did this for me no problem. Charged me $65. It is set with a tech2 and is stored in the RDL module (remote door lock module). There is no liability issue when they change it according to the recommendation for tires that are on your truck. I suppose if you asked them to change it with the stock/OEM tires still on it, then it would make sense for them to deny it.

Hey Jeff...good to know that they will do it without having to "sneak" it in! So, do you still get any errors on your D.I.C. from the TPMS's? Did you just tell the service tech what psi range to set it to based on your wants / needs?

My tech made it sound liek he "shouldn't" do it...but he would if I asked him to. Maybe he was more concerned about sliding it through under warranty!?

So...if I just tell him that I want it reprogrammed to my receommended psi they will do it and keep those damn errors from annoying me!

Yep, my OEM tires nominal pressure was 35 PSI and the range is +/- 10 PSI. They cannot set the "range", they set the nominal pressure. I had right around 45 PSI in my new tires per the recommendation, so my TPMS was on the high edge of the range and would give me errors on the DIC. I had it changed to 45 PSI, so my range is now 35-55 PSI and I have not had problem since.

The techs were a little confused as they hadn't done it on a NBS truck yet, but they were more than willing and had it figured out and done within 30 minutes. I didn't even put my stock ECM/TCM in since I knew this info was not stored there, but I told them not to re-flash the ECM/TCM anyway. They said "fine" and never even questioned why I made that request. Although this was a Chevy dealer close to me, not the GMC dealer I usually have service my truck. I wouldn't have said that to them :sigh: .

i'm running 45psi in my 35's and the sensors work fine and i did nothing to them. occassionally i'll get a message that says check tire pressure, but thats it.

I run 50psi in all four tires, before the reprogram I was getting all the messages from the instrument cluster but after the reprogram everything is great and I haven't gotten any messages.

Awesome to hear everybody. I will go out and do that. I too am running 50 PSI, and the error codes are driving me nuts!

All the best,

Nick

Hey Nick~

Nice looking rig! What size wheels / tires are you running?

Thanks for the props~

You got it! Running 18's. I liked the look vs. 20's.
