i am new to the custom tune thing. I have had handheld programmers before but i was curious as to how you put the tune into the computer of the truck and what happens if you need to bring the truck in for service? Is there a way to put the factory tune back in it and then return to the custom tune after the service work?

If you tune your V-Max you should go with a custom tune. If you get a custom tune u will gain horsepower and torque because these trucks are really detuned from the factory. A hand held will really do nothing to your truck other than raise the shift points and remove the speed limiter, but it will not remove TM and the 4 second delay these truck come with. If u go with a tune, you can keep the factory PCM & TCM so you'll have the stock tune when you need to go for dealer service. You need to buy another PCM & TCM so you can have that set tuned, so you can switch to your stock PCM & TCM for dealer service. I have my stock PCM & TCM tuned, I don't have an extra PCM, I probably pick one up soon so I can switch in case I have to go the dealer. If you remove TM 100% u should also pick up a shift kit for your transmission so it will last longer, this is probably my next mod because I want my transmission to last. My truck when it was tuned is completely different than when I first bought it, now when I floor it takes off it doesn't have the lag anymore, after it shifts it doesn't lose power because 80% TM is gone. It is really fun to drive, if you want a custom tune I suggest you go with Black Bear Performance.

DiabloSport does remove engine TM, it does remove the 4 second delay, it doesn't not have TCM control yet. You don't need to buy and extra ECM and TCM. An email tune will most likely be more aggressive than a handheld, but handheld is more convenint returning stock tune. The Diablo tuners can be fine tuned to get some pretty good improvements to your MAX.

That's why the Diablosport got my attention!!! It can remove all of the TM or some of it(you choose how much) and also either adjust's the 4 second delay or removes it...

Even if this hand held removes the TM or the 4 second delay it doesn't give u the same results as a custom tune. A custom tune has more options to change than any hand held. If u really want to tune the truck yourself, buy yourself EFI live and tune it yourself.

I agree 100% with huero626. One thing to remember with any type of tune is that the new PCM and TCMs in the NBS trucks, not sure about the classics, come with a program that will keep track of the number of flashes done to the computer. So if you get a tune and then flash it back to stock for warranty work, the dealer will know about it. That is why I kept my stock PCM and TCM and retuned a spare set.

Yeah, I think it starts on the 2008 models where the PCM keeps track of how many times it has been flashed with a new tune and after a certain amount the PCM just locks itself. How much did u get the extra set for?

Pretty sure that is only on the 09+ diesels and the Vettes so far. But I could be wrong. :banghead:

Best bet is keeping your stock modules and tuning a spare set.

This is only true on the 07.5+ LMM Diesels, but, nobody will ever find a Predator flash on one of those trucks, TechII or not.

Now, if you are running someone elses programmer on a LMM, I'd keep it away from the dealer or risk losing the warranty.

The Predator is ahead of the game on this subject.

Also, keep in mind that an aggressive tune is never the best idea for a daily driven vehicle, but the Predator gives you control over fuel, timing, rev limits, etc, so you can fune tune the combo to your particular combination.

NO mail order tune can do that, especially if the guy writing the tune is a few hundered miles away and has never seen your truck...you send out the PCM and you are STUCK with what you get back, plus you are left with no way to datalog it (which the Predators do) or even read/clear codes should one come up...

Thanks

I'll start off by admitting I've never had a custom tune. and I'll also admit you'll probably get more aggressive performance with a custom tune. But, I do have a diablosport predator and I can say, even with only the 87 octane tune installed, there is a night and day difference in response and performance.

one quick personal experience that happend tuesday night, a few light sprinkles so the road was moist but no standing water. I came around a corner, started going down the road, and gassed it. the tranny downshifted into 1st AND BROKE MY TIRES LOOSE AT 20 MPH! again, this was on the 87 octane tune....I'm scared to put the performance tune in! :)

Sorry mike, But I don't know if I can buy that. GM is claiming they will find any reprogamming if it's done. It sounds like you're just trying to sell your product.

I'm pretty sure that GM will find that someone tuned a disel with any programmer, all u have to do is drive u will notice a difference in it. Any mail order tune can do what u just describe, you forget most tuners have EFI live or HPtuners and with that software u can tune the truck way better than any hand held out there. With justin at black bear performance he sends u some hardware that connects to the truck computer and it see how your truck drives and it records how your truck responds and with all data it got from that he sends u a personalized tune made specifiably for your truck. IMO Custom Tune is the way to go. It is way cheaper and you can do way more stuff than any hand held out there.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
