oil pressure

Hey all,

Got a question on oil pressure. When my engine starts cold my oil pressure is up around 48-50 lbs and stays around there until the truck is warmed up. After driving a while and at a complete stop the guage drops down to just above the red line!! Is it normal to drop that low? What pressure should I be expecting?

I'm running Mobil1 5-30 w/ Pure1 filter on a 5.7L -> 94 Chevy

The basic rule of thumb is 10psi for every 1000rpm.

If you're getting that, you're safe. If you op gauge just reads high and low, no numbers, I suggest putting in a mecahanical op gauge, at least for testing.

On a similar (and depressing) subject, low oil pressure is not normally the sign of a bad pump. It usually points to bad main bearings.

Mine runs about 40psi when cruising at 2000 rpms.  Is this not normal then?

That's good.

I'm sorry, I should have said "A minimum of 10psi for every 1000rpm."

So things are actually running normal? At an idle I should be expecting only about 7 - 8 lbs then...

Thanks
