Is anyone having any problems with their 6 liter engine? My engine has alot a valve tapping noises and a knock at cold engine start ups. My engine is also a gas hog and does not act like a 300 hp engine and this is my second engine. My first engine had the same problems and that is why it was replaced. GM told me they will not do anything else for me because the engine is operating at GM specs. Does anyone have these problems with their 6 liter engine and have they been fixed? Can anyone help me out with my situation? Please contact me at [email protected].

So far mine has been quiet, I am a little let down by the mileage though. I recently came from a 97 powerstroke and it got like 16.25 towing like 8500 lbs, but it ate front end parts so bad and then a dual mass fly wheel $1100 for that I said enough is enough, it was hard to see it go, but the wife can't drive a 5 speed and the auto seems firm and strong. I hope it does good, I  love these silverados, they just look darn good. The best milage so far is like 13.5 and I babied it to get that. I'm just hoping it eats way less parts.

Welcome to the forum.

I have about 3200 miles on mine and it is strong.  I do hear a little noise when it is cold but nothing worse than my 5.3L was.  My gas milage around town has been pretty consistant around 10 mpg and the best I've seen is a little under 14.5 mpg.  I'm hoping that a few more miles and some warmer temps will give me another 1 mpg....

I have the tapping noise too. It started at about 3000 miles. The truck has tons of power now at 6600 miles. It got alot better after it broke in . My MPG is about 14 average.  The power definatly came on after the first oil change and the milage got  better too.

I have, and have had since new, an odd chirping like noise(pretty faint) on cold startups.  Goes away once warmed up.  Other than that(it may actually be the aluminum heads and iron block) no problems yet.  I have 3000 miles on mine.  No knock, ping, nothing.  If it does start developing noises, I'll just put the Flowmaster 40's back on.  :)

I had picked up a new Denali last weekend and found that it had the knock (and some other problems) everyone has discribed.

Long story short I gave it back due to the problems. When I returned it I had a conversation with the service manager. He told me the knock is a problem with the valve train and it is supposed to be fixed in the '03 model year.

Since I am waiting for a new Yukon now I am hoping this one will not be a problem.
