Transmission Noise

I have an 05 GMC 2500HD with 6.0L engine, 4L80E trans, & 30k miles

There's a noise that's coming from the trans while in gear that sounds like a whistle from a tea kettle. This is a constant noise that will go away if I shift to park or neutral.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

A whistle from the trans? You sure it's not the intake manifold leaking? Maybe the change in engine rpms makes the intake manifold whistle go away when you put it in gear?

I have that whistle on my 01, had it from day one. I can hear it best when I'm in a fast food drive thru when the sound bounces off the wall. When it was new I took it to the dealer and they changed the torque converter and valve body, still have the noise. I just decided to live with it. My 05 work van has the same exact noise. Both vehicles only do it when the transmission is in first gear. I only hear the noise while stopped in drive or if I shift to 1st . If I shift to 2nd I the noise will fade away. I have heard that it might be the oil passages might have a burr in them making the noise under the high pressure fluid passing thru. I just figured it's kinda normal....just like my piston slap is normal .. I have 140,00 miles now with zero problems, and the transmission fluid still looks and smells new.
