Change Power Outlet To Switched

I have a 2007 NBS/ LT trim level ext cab truck. For the life of me I don't understand why GM nicely put in 3 power outlets but none of them are switched.

I've done some searching but have limited success. Is there an easy way to change them to switched.

I have an external Sirius unit. I kinda wished it would come on and go off with my key.

Preferably I'd like to do this with the outlet in the center counsel.

Thanks for any help.

You will need to find a switched power line. A good option is off the radio harness. You will need a relay to trigger your outlet and you will splice into the positive wire on the outlet. I do have a diagram of how to wire a relay, somewhere, can't find it right now. If i do find it I'll post it.

Why not just power the unit off the radio harness. (positive) Seems easier then trying to re wire a outlet?? Just buy a outlet with two wires comming off it, wire the poistive to a switched wire then the neg to ground. Plug the lighter plug from the Sirius into the outlet you wired up behind the radio and your done!!!

( I would hide it all behind the radio and just run the power cord out from the dash somewhere not noticable)

Reason you don't want to do that is extra draw on the radio harness, fuse won't handle it and also the HIGH likelyhood of electrical noise being introduced to the radio. You WILL get buzz. Putting a relay in eliminates that possiblity and also puts the power draw on a circuit that was designed for it.

This diagram is using a standard Bosch relay.
