305-60r18 Vs. 285-65r18's

I'm going to get the 2.5 x 1.25 Truxxx leveling kit for my 08' Sierra ex cab All Terrain. I want to go with the Dick Cepek Fun Country II's or Dick Cepek Mud Country's, but they are only availabe in 305x60R18's. Has anyone installed this size on 18x8" wheels? The manufacturer suggest at least 8.5" wide wheels. I really want to keep my factory All Terrain wheels, so if I have to I'll just go with BFG All Terrain 285-65R18's.

You should have no problem at all running the 305's on an 8" wide wheel. I looked at their website. I'm not sure why they would recommend the 8.5" minimum for the 305/60's when they recommend the 8" minimum for 305/70's. I have known several people that have run the set-up in question. I say go for it.

Thanks man. It will be a few weeks, but I'll try and get some picks up. It didn't look like white outlined letter were available in that size for some reason, but after looking at your truck I think it will be fine w/o it. Your truck is bad azz btw.

More sidewall reduces the angle at which the sidewall sits relative to the wheel and thus pulls away from the bead less.

That makes sense. Sounds like people have done it though w/o issues. Still a little skeptical about it looking bulbous in the side wall area. If anyone running this set up has pics I wouldn't mind seeing them.

i've been going back and forth all week with that same decision for my new wheels. although my backspacing and offset are a little different, they told me I would have to do some trimming with the 305's. I opted for the 285's, toyo open country a/t...If all goes well, I should be sporting new rims and tires by tomorrow...

I am getting new treads tomorrow morning. I have the 18 factory Z71 wheels. I went with the Cooper STT in a LT275/65R18 in a load range C. You cant find a decent priced tire in an 18. Not to mention its hard to find a tire in an 18 thats not load range E's. I had to cough up $236 a tire for these dang tires. I was going to get the regular Cooper S/T but I had those before and wanted a little more aggressive tire for the old Z.
