No Chime

I noticed that my 05 Silverado has no chime. Yes, it has the factory radio. I know that the chime is linked to the radio...does the radio actually produce the sound or does it send the signal to a box under the dash somewhere? No chime with the keys in the ignition and door open and also no chime with the headlights left on. I looked at the manual and it says you can change the volume by hitting the 6 preset, I did that, it comes up on the radio display (normal and loud) but still no chime. Could the previous owner have disabled it somehow? Radio works perfect in other respects. Anyone?

Yes I do.....

BTW, I did read the owner's manual and the only thing I could find in there was regarding the normal/loud volume adjustment with the #6 preset.

The radio does not produce the chime. Yes it's very possible that the previous owner disabled it since there are several threads on the site that cover that exact issue. If I'm not mistaken the chime tone originates at the Body Control Module....look for a cut wire on the connector.

Where can I find the BCM? I guess most people would love this and that's why there are threads explaining how to disable, but I figure it's there for a reason and I just want everything to work like it's supposed to. I searched "chime" and I didn't come up with anything specific...so I tried doing my homework! :shakehead: Thanks!

scroll through the dic with the steering wheel controls...the owner before you turned them off with those...it should be under chimes or warning sounds...

Cool...I'll try that. Thanks for the help

it under your dash near you emergency brake pedal..it a box with a bunch of wires!!!!

Just went out and checked the DIC...nothing regarding chime. Only locking/unlocking preferences, curb view, alarm sounds, km/miles and language. That's all. Tomorrow I'll crawl under the dash and see what I can find. Thanks again.

The threads you refer to are about disabling the key in ign chime function. There is about 30 reasons the chime can activate and to my knowledge the only way to make them all inoperative is to make the speaker not work or install the wrong radio.

The chime is produced by the radio. It can be processed by different modules depending on what the chime is warning about. Does the left speaker work? That is the only speaker that the chime should come out of, if it doesn't work the chime will not either. If the chime never operates chances are it is an internal radio issue or the incorrect radio is installed. I don't think there is an easy way to program the radio to not chime. If there was GM wouldn't be providing it as the chime is a saftey item.

Actually, I have noticed that the L/F speaker does not fully work. I thought something sounded odd with it so I turned the balance/fade to all 4 speakers seperately and the R/F sounds normal and the L/F only the tweeter works, so all you really hear are the cymbals and such and nothing else. So could this be as simple as replacing the defective speaker (or better set of front aftermarket speakers at that) ? So the chime sound does not originate at the BCM?

As far as the radio, it is a factory radio, and I have removed it and reinstalled it and from what I understand the radios are coded to the vehicle and if it was in the wrong vehicle it would lock it out...and mine went back in and functioned fine...

Thanks for the help.

I've put aftermarket head units in 03 and later trucks and with the appropriate adapters the chimes will still operate. The factory radio may indeed produce the chime but the signal for it to do so comes from the BCM.

As I was saying.....Yes it's possible that the prior owner disabled it. But since your speaker is fried I'd get that replaced first.

Thanks for that link. Man, after reading that and all the horror stories I may just want to leave it this way! :shakehead: But nevertheless, I still need a L/F speaker that works. So I guess I will replace that speaker, or both front speakers...and then if this thing starts working again and starts pissing me off like it does so many others, I guess I will go from there. Who knows, maybe the last guy punched out that speaker for the chime...

No problem, for what it's worth my left front speaker in my 02 was the first one to go tits up as well...just cheap paper speakers.
