Partial Onstar Protection For Free?

I recently decided not to renew my Onstar after the free service expires. They went on-and-on-and-on about how I won't be protected, blah, blah blah. However, on my ride home today I thought what would happen if you got into an accident and pushed the On-Star button for help. I know someone would come online and look to renew your service. But what if you asked for help instead?

Ohio, FL, RI, MN, WI, Wash., Vermont (and maybe a couple others) all have laws of "duty to rescue". In these states, can Onstar really deny not making the assist call even if you don't have their service? I would think they would be liable if they refused (but I'm not a lawyer).

yeah, I think you're a cheap bastard!!!

Not cheap (kiss my Denali's *ss  ), just hate when companies try to force services down my throat while I'm trying to make a simple request. They really got me thinking when they stated "I will no longer have the protection of Onstar," and I thought is that really true? Maybe I'm just looking for payback for not having bluetooth in my truck because of it having Onstar (assuming it's a contract thing with GM).

They still come on the line and ask what the emergency is. While I had the Trailblazer I had a friend of mine press the red button and scream "help help" before I could stop him (which really didn't go over too well).

All cell phones, whether active or not, (and whether locked or unlocked) are required by law to process 911 calls - I would assume Onstar works the same way.

However, when your airbags go off the signal that is sent will probably not be received.

I found this in a pontiac solstice forum. I guess they know more than us

Subject: Disabled Onstar System Identification #PIC3597D - (10/05/2007)

Models: All OnStar® equipped vehicles.

Condition/Concern:

A customer may report that the OnStar® does not connect, status LED is not illuminated or a disabled system message is heard. This may be due to the OnStar® system being disabled.

Recommendation/Instructions:

OnStar® deactivated vehicles where the customer has either chosen not to renew their OnStar® subscription after expiration, or when the initial activation has never taken place. As a part of the OnStar® renewal communications, customers are notified that the OnStar® system in their vehicle will be deactivated unless they elect to renew the account.

After the vehicle has been successfully deactivated, customers will experience the following when attempting to contact OnStar® from their vehicle:

Blue OnStar® key: depending on vehicle hardware, the customer will either connect to a sales advisor or will hear an automated demonstration message.

Note: If the customer wants to activate OnStar®, press the OnStar blue button. The LED will illuminate and start flashing, Allow the call to complete (this may take several minutes). Once the call completes request a unit configuration and retest the system.

Emergency key: A demo message will be played indicating the service has been deactivated.

Note: When successfully deactivated, the OnStar® system will not attempt to connect to the OnStar center if the vehicle's airbags deploy.

That sounds like something some on my friends would do... :D

I got a call on my truck phone recently from OnStar saying that if I did not renew my service (that I never signed up for in the first free year anyway), it would be deactivated and no longer work at any time for any reason. (their words)

I told them I was a Crazy Clown and was gonna hang a large size 42 red shoe in their ass if they ever bothered me again.

Haven't heard from them since.
