Stock Horns

I think i've read pretty much all other posts and still didn't get my question answered. I know i'm too cheap for air horns so please do not suggest this. THe passenger side horn has died due to water spraying up into it, and i just want to get a stock replacement.

Is there a way to pratect it from the elements?

I never had an issue with a horn dying because of water.

How deep did you get your truck into water and did the water go over the top of the horn for some extended period? The horn should be facing downwards so any water will drain out.

Re-mounting the horn up higher could help. Drill a hole further up the radiator support and relocate the horn. Then splice in a longer piece of wire and connect it.

It hasen't been in water deeper than three feet. Water just sprays up and gets trapped in it even though it's facing down. I think the water in it rusted out the guts.

Apparently this is a pretty common problem, I guess you are one of the lucky ones.

From what i've heard, i'm lucky it lasted me 133,000 miles.

GM has a bulletin out to add a shield on the end of the horns that prevent water from splashing into them.

I can't find the bulletin,but the part number for the shield is 89046906.

You have been supper awesome and i appreciate the info, but one more little question. This sheild, do I have to get it from the dealership, or can i order it online. (Where is the part number for?)

Seocond little question. I found some good looking replacements online which were priced at $45ish. If you got new ones from your dealer, how much did they put you back, and would it be easier to just get them from my dealer.

The horn is a FIAMM brand and it's available for $15 from Pep Boys and the like. No need to spend $50 at the dealer for the exact same part. I found that if I bent the bracket on the passenger side so the horn is parallel to the ground with the opening facing down that it drains well enough to keep the horn from going bad. Mine seemed to go bad on the first day of a hard freeze (trapped water freezing and expanding???). I used to buy a new horn every 1-2 years, since I bent the bracket I haven't needed a new horn in about 5 years.

The part number I gave is the GM number available from your GM dealer.

As far as I know you can only get the shield from a GM dealer.

You can get the horns from other suppliers as Lincoln has mentioned.

Thanks for your input, in called my dealler and the guy there said he hadent heard a thing about the sheild, i dont know.

I just got a new OE horn and replaced it. Bent the bracket kinda like Lincoln was takin about. Looks more protected, we'll see what happens.

OK...Trust me though,there is a shield,I stock them here at the dealership,we sell one everytime we sell a new horn due to the fact our winters here are full of salt/snow and they help protect the new horn from the elements.

I had that problem too and then when I mounted my other horns down there they use to get water in them like no tomorrow. So I ended up sticking an extension on the wires from there and mounted my horns behind my grill pointing down. They are Stock horns from a 78' Buick Park avenue. Definitely hard on the ears and demand attention when depressed.

Anyways, if anyone wants pics or sound let me know and I'll try and do that this weekend. If I were you I'd either move them up higher or mount them behind the grill somewhere...
