What do you guys think is the best upgrade for a 2006 GMC Sierra 5.3? I have a flowmaster exhaust cat back, K&N Air filter, and use Amzoil 0W 30. I have seen tons of people talk about Tunes, but it seems that there are mixed results!! I would love to have more low end power, but I do not want to change my shift points!! What have you all done and what are the results?

thanks

I have a 2005 silverado 5.3L and hands down Superchips is THE best tuner. Before i bought the Superchips Cortex, i was getting about 14.5 mpg at BEST but now im getting 16.0mpg...I am driving pretty nicely but if im in it a lot i get 14.5-15mpg. Also the power is unbelievable, you notice it right off the bat, and you have the choice of choosing your shift points but you dont have to. Theres a ton more features it has but seriously, it is the best.

How much did you pay, where did you get it from. how hard is it to install. Do you know the part# of exact name of the chip you got.

Thanks a lot

It is the Superchips Cortex 2950, and is extremely easy to install, you just plug it into you OBDII port under the dash on the driver side and you select your options and then select tune, and it does it for you in minutes. I actually got a steal on it....they retail for about $429 brand new....i bought a BRAND NEW one on ebay for $276 shipped. If you look on ebay you may find one...also if you get it new it has a 2 year powertrain warranty

Do you have to keep the super chip plugged into the truck. Or can you reprogram and then unplug it. How are you able to put the factory setting back? For warranty they don't like when you mess around with the computer settings!!! I also saw that it does many gm cars. I have a G-6 that I would love to try it on as well.

Thanks for your help!

I have the Edge Evolution and get a pretty consistent 17.5 MPG City, and have gotten 21.5 MPG on highway trips. I use the Economy Tune most, it uses 87 Octane fuel, so you're not tied to Premium like some other Tunes. It also has options for Just Transmission (just adjust shift firmness), Towing and Performance (the later require Premium Fuel). I tow a TT so I also like the additional gauges the Edge has, and it comes with a nifty Pod to mount on your dash!

Only one vehicle can be tuned at a time because the tuner stores the original tune in it's internal memory. That's how it puts you truck back to the OEM Tune, and no, you do not have to leave the tuner connected like you did the older SuperChips Chips!

Ryan, I don't think you are getting very many responses to this thread for a couple reasons. First, this topic has been covered in detail over and over again, so a lot of the guys that have been around here for a while and have a lot of pertinent information are tired of answering tune/chip/exhaust questions. Use the search function. You will find countless threads about tunes (handhelds and custom).

Second, you are going to find very few guys on here that will recommend a handheld ("chip"...Really haven't used a chip per-say since 95) style tune. I would say about 98% of the people that frequent this site hate hand helds. If you truly want the most out of your truck (mileage, power, removal of the nannies gm puts on them, etc.) you are going to want to get a custom tune. It isn't much more expensive and often times cheaper than a handheld and you will get much more than any handheld out there. I have put some links below, check them out. Then feel free to ask questions.
