Different Year 4l80 Questions

Alright, guys. A little background before I ask my short question. I have a 2002 1500HD 6.0 & 4L80. I want to build my own transmission and see what it is like, so I am buying a buildable core 4L80 from a buddy who says the only thing really wrong is 1>2 upshift slip. That doesn't matter to me because the thing is coming apart as soon as I get my rebuild/teardown manual. I am getting it for 600$ which I think is good, considering what I've seen for going prices of 4L80 cores.

 

Now, my question is, the tranny I am going to get is from a 2003 truck. Will it work with my 02 flawlessly? I read that the 97's and 98's will work but I would have to change out the solenoids and it would be okay, but as for an 03, I haven't read anything. Thanks ya'll, i appreciate any info!

According to a buddy with the Hollander system, 2002 4L80 is a one year item. This likely means electronics are different. I'm not saying you couldn't MAKE it work since you will have both transmissions there, but Hollander says no.

I dont believe it is a 1 year system, as all tranny shops in my area have told me that atleast a 1997 model will work; preferably 1998 otherwise you'd have to retrofit the 1997 solenoids to the harness. What they didnt tell me/what I didnt think to ask, was what year I needed to stop at. I know that the like...07's and all use a TCM rather than the VCM doing it all...but I dont know much else. I went ahead and bought the thing today and the vss plug looks the same. Other than that, I dont know much else, I havent taken a close look at it yet.

 

Technically, I wont have both to look at. The reason I bought the core to build is because I cannot have the truck down because it is my daily driver. So my intention is to swap at the last minute...so no swapping parts haha

Well... it's not etched in stone that it won't work. Hollander is the computer system that salvage yards use to determine fitment. It is pretty accurate but not always 100%. My experience had been that if they conclude something does not interchange, there is a valid reason for it. It might be as simple as swapping some items from your current trans... but something is different.

 

I'd bet a good transmission shop could solve this before you get too far in.
