Nick The Great Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 This is some scary stuff here. And we thought PE Delay and Torque Management was bad . . . http://abcnews.go.com/Business/BusinessTra...8454&page=1 Article's a month or so old, but still
Darkanion Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Yeah - I've read about EDR's. I didn't know about the VSDR's in the GT-R, though. For the last 20 yrs, I've wondered when cars would start issuing their own tickets.... With current technologies, it wouldn't be that difficult. Have "smart" speed limit signs that tell the car how fast you're supposed to be going - supposedly, as a safety thing, to highlight that speed on your speedometer, so you know to slow down... And then, a few years later, have that tie in to the car's internet access and if the car's speed is over the speed limit, send a message to the local police to mail you a ticket... OR, if it's too excessive, just shut the vehicle down and send the GPS coordinates to the local police. OnStar is already starting to implement a system that allows the police to tell OnStar to tell the vehicle "go into reduce speed/performance mode" ... and lock the doors and don't let the doors be unlocked until the police tell them it's ok to unlock the doors. It is being implemented as a "theft recovery" device. But, it's not too many more steps for the cops to look at the car and go, "Hey, that's a 2010 Camaro.. I bet that has that OnStar thing in it... Let's call OnStar, give them the plate # for the vehicle, and have them shut the car down for me..." You'd be driving your own rolling jail cell, until the cops released you ....... to take you to a real one or - at the very least - write you a ticket and send you on your way.
SoCalChris Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 These things are old news. Most cars have had these for years already. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_data_recorder http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/internet...-blackbox_x.htm
pennzoil29 Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 It's all an invasion of our privacy if you ask me. Pretty soon we'll be limited to the number of times we wipe our ass after a good shit.
Draenor Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I wouldn't turn mine over to the authorities nor insurance for anything. I think that it would be a form of self-incrimination.

Most cars have had these for years already. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_data_recorder http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/internet...-blackbox_x.htm It doesn't make it right though! There's a big stink around here because one city put up red light cameras. I can't wait until my truck rats me out to the cops.

All they'd have to do to get the information is get a warrant or court order. If you somehow managed to destroy the information, you could be brought up on charges of Tampering with Evidence, Impeding A Police Investigation, Obstruction of Justice, or who knows what else..
DofD Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 When the time comes that vehicles start reporting the infractions of their owners to the police, it's time to stop getting new vehicles and stick with older ones. The future... When there are no drivers, just passengers.

It is not illegal to disable your "black box". At least not yet anyway.
mkelly Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I guess this will make me unpopular here, but I like the idea. For me it has the ability to prove that whatever happened wasnt my fault. Plus in the case that no one is alive to tell investigators what happened it gives them a chance to figure out what happened and possibly fix a problem(this is why we have black boxes in aircraft).
Darkanion Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 The future... When there are no drivers, just passengers. I wonder what Volkswagen's slogan will be then?

Well, "not yet anyway" is where we're at right now re: the cops being able to plug-in to the current black box to give you a speeding or reckless driving ticket. So, take your "b/s" banner and go back to harassing Tobias about his non-hairy ass!
Darkanion Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Plus in the case that no one is alive to tell investigators what happened it gives them a chance to figure out what happened and possibly fix a problem(this is why we have black boxes in aircraft). ...and if that's all they're used for, great! But, being technology, they start these invasions of privacy as being something "good for you." Then, it becomes less and less benign...
