2007 Gmt900 Silverado Transfer Case No Worky

So I bought a GMT900 2007 4x4 Silverado Vmax extended cab last August. It has the autotrac transfer case with the automatic 4WD. For about the last 6 months the truck has had severe problems shifting into 4wd. When you twist the dial, the truck will need anywhere from 5 - 30 minutes to shift. Sometimes it won't even shift out of 2wd. The 4wd light will keep blinking but nothing has locked up. I've found that out the hard way after getting the truck severely stuck a few times and having no 4WD to bail me out. It also does this in auto 4wd. At the same time, no error warnings show up on the DIC or anything.

I took it into the dealership and they said there wasn't any problems, WTF. They pulled a bunch of engine codes but said they were not related. They commented that it was probably a wiring problem but all of the wiring checked out fine.

Any ideas of what the problem may be? This is getting frustrating, I'd fix it myself but I made the incorrect assumption that the dealership would have heard of a history of problems and been able to easily fix it under warranty.

The truck only has 15000 km on it.

Bring it back to the dealer, hand them the keys, get a loaner, and tell them to call you when the 4wd is working properly. Make them demonstrate it's proper operation.

I plan on doing that anyhow, but if I can get the phyiscal solution before hand, I'll do it myself and eat the cost. With my reliability history with this truck, I don't trust the dealerships anymore for fixing the problems.

um dont you have the warranty? Why would you risk voiding it out?

Having the warranty doesn't get the problem solved. It just means I get free estimates on what the problem 'may' be. I was planning on supercharging this truck anyhow so a drivetrain warranty would be useless to me.

I've been doing my own work on my vehicles for a long time and taking this truck in for warranty work was an rare action for me. I don't trust the monkeys working at the dealerships ever since they severely screwed up my vette multiple times over a single problem and feel much better fixing the problem myself.

Heck, when I brought the truck in the first time, they told me that if they couldn't find a TSB for the problem they probably wouldn't be able to fix it properly.

Well Hell, if you are going to have a blown truck, might as well do it yourself, especially if you have the knowledge and experience. No direct fix unless you simply want to replace it.

Aha, The 4wd shift solenoid on the transfer case was stuck.

Aha, problem solved. The 4wd shift solenoid on the transfer case was stuck. Freed it up manually.

Your kidding...damn that was a quick fix

While I have the truck on the lift, anyone have their intermediate pipes and their cats rusting to hell? Time for headers I guess.

Mine had kinda the same problem only in reverse. Stayed in 4wd even when showing 2wd...had to click it up to Auto and back to 2wd to get it to release. It was the encoder on the transfer case and was replaced under warranty. Diagnostic check caught problem...sounds like you need another dealer to do your warranty work that's either competent or doesn't lie.....

that should be surface rust, should not be rusting out....yet.

you probably know this already but go T304 Stainless and that should solve your problems
