Performance Tuner On 08 Silverado

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I was wondering whether there have been any issues with using a programmer on a NBS Silverado (5.3L), especially whether it messes with the AFM system switching between V4 and V8.

Or any other issue that is changed by it: gas mileage, engine lights, etc.

Was thinking about Edge performance, but are there any other recommendations?

Advice would be appreciated!

I have edge no problems at all. It goes in 4cl mode faster and stays in longer. Most of the guys here will recomend a custom tune from blackbearperformance.com. Just seach and you find tons of information on programmers and custom tunes.

Hang tight....there will be PLENTY of first hand experience opinions on Blackbear's tunes starting next week. There are a about a dozen regulars on here getting tuned in MN this weekend (myself included) and there will be plenty of threads about it next week. Then, in Dec, there are another dozen+ on here getting tuned in the Dallas area.

I have the Edge as well and have had no problems. I personally like the additional guages the Edge provides!

Not arguing that a Custom tune isn't better, I just didn't want anything as permenent as a custom tune, and like the flexability to change the tune when my needs change, like running 87 octane on the economy tune when gas was close to $5.00 a gallon, and now running the Extreme tune and enjoying the extra power at half the price it was a month ago!

I love the guages espically the APP(aplied petal position). I also love being able to reflash my computer anytime. These trucks really seem to learn how we drive. If I get on mine a bunch then go back to easy on gas it acts differently and doesn't want to go in 4cl mode.

I never had a custom tune (I'm sure I'd like it since it would remove 4 second delay and TM) but I happy with edge and I like the way the transmission shifts compared to stock. I just wish I could adjust the fuel like Diablo.

Matt,

Please tell me that your sig pic is a Photoshop job and your tailgate doesn't really look like that. :(

Well I tought it was pretty good looking. Maybe I should of gone with a more expensive type.

No, I wasn't referring to the "quality" of it, just the fact it's there at all.

Here is what you should have done. :(

I'm using the Hypertech Energy Max hand held tuner. It's pretty good, I like the fact that I can make changes on the fly (tire size/rev limiter/max MPH) and the fact that it only cost me $150 really helped. I noticed a difference in power, nothing like the blackbear guys report but still not bad. I just changed the shift firmness so see how I like it. If your patient then order a PCM if not get a hand held.

+1 on the EDGE - i keep mine in performance - runs smooth - V4 seems to be running alot more than it did in economy - obviously right foot dependant though .. i too like the idea of returning to stock

(finger print issue's aside ) ... jus figure what make ya happy

Regarding ther Edge, it all depends on what you want out of your tuner?

The Edge does increase power and improves shifting parameters. BUT, it does NOTHING for removing any TM or any other "Nannies". So, if your looking to improve throttle response and overall driveability, the Edge is not your best choice.

I had one, it still "fell on it's face" when stepping on the gas, so I sold it and got a custom tune. I never looked back.
