Just Did My First Oil Change

It came due for an oil change in my Sierra so I decided to switch to AMSOIL Full Synthetic 5w-30.

I read a lot on here about the oil changes and how much they suck. I read about the fast burst of draining oil as soon as the plug is out.

I prepared myself - I had cardboard all layed out underneath, I had a funnel ready to catch the stream of oil, I had the drip pan ready underneath the funnel.

I thought I was prepared enough, well, the d@mn funnel had a screen in it. This didn't allow the oil to flow through the funnel very smoothly. The funnel was filling up fast, I had to let it down into the pan. I didn't realize the oil was still flowing at a fast pace. The oil shot clear past the cardboard & all over the driveway.

My sweatshirt got soaked in oil & it looked like I was wearing new hair-gel.

Once everything was drained, it took forever to get everything cleaned up (as much as I could anyways). Next time I'll be sure to have a wide opening in the funnel

Topped her off with 6qts ASL 5w-30 & tested for leaks. I plan on doing an oil analysis @ 10k miles, I'd like to see if I can stretch it to 12k or 15k, but I'll let that analysis tell me when it's due for the next oil change.

Next time get a video

Seriously, lose the funnel and just get yourself one of these oil drain pans. I have one like this and I have never spilled a drop.

Way to go...lol. I don't bother with a funnel. Amsoil says 25k or 1 year.

Yeah, it is a pain when draining the oil. I get under there with my tray and balance it up near the drain port, and slowly remove the plug, and try and follow the stream with the container. It's like trying to piss into a cup after a night of drinking.

I've got something similar, and when I changed the oil today, and the only oil that touched the driveway was from me trying to pour the old oil into the bottle from the pan.

I had the same problems with my oil changes even with a large drain pan. The last time I was ready for it but forgot about when the stream slows down to a trickle... it went all over the skid plates and then dripped all over the garage floor.

Good call! Did you get the F107 or F107N (w/ the nipple valve)? Did you also have to get the adapter? This is definitely going on next!

I also saw the Fram Sure Drain system, but the one you mentioned has a lifetime warranty and seems to be of better quality.

Does yours ever leak? Did it slow down the burst of oil when you opened it (or will you not know until your next oil change)?

I've been using these on a couple of vehicles for a few years. No troubles at all. The FRam Sure Drain is no longer produced. They had trouble with some of them. The Fumoto does not leak and it slows the flow- enough so that you should drain it while warm and allow around 30 minutes for the oil to drain. It's not a big deal if you plan for the time.

I got the F107N and the adapter. Not sure if I needed the adapter but I emailed them first and they said I needed it. Have not changed the oil yet since installing it. I did lots of searching on it before hand and did not find anyone that had any problems with it.

The nipple is a nice idea since it also comes with a section of tubing so you can drain the oil right into any container you wish.

Once I had one of those large catch pans, I've never had an issue draining the oil. Sure it takes a little guesswork to get it in the right spot to catch the oil, and then sometimes you have to move it to keep up with the trickle...but it's worth it, especially when you can use 1 pan to do 4 oil changes.

Exactly! No offense, but anyone who needs special drain valves ought to consider having someone else do their oil changes. It's really not that hard guys.
