EvilleDoug Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I recently changed my oil and put in 6 qts of quaker state 5W30 and a new filter. While trying to decide which oil to use, I wondered about the Royal Purple. I aske the saleman at my local Advanced Auto Parts store and he said he doesn't reccomend using the Royal Purple because of the high miles on my truck. If anyone who reads this has any input or clarification, I would greatly appreciate it. My Truck is an '01 GMC Sierra Z71 ExCab 4X4 SLT. It has 160,000 miles and as far as I know I am the second owner. Also, a little Guidance on the transfer case and rear diff fluid change would be helpful too. Thanks, Doug Evansville, IN
CapitalTruck Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 At this stage in the game I can't say that I see the point of switching to synthetic. Just use the tried and true 5w30 every 5000 miles. Thanks, Doug Evansville, IN The axles come from the factory with synthetic IIRC so you should be ok there. The transfer case I wouldn't use anything but the GM fluid. Royal Purple is a good synthetic and its one of the ones I use in my trucks. At this stage in the game I can't say that I see the point of switching to synthetic. Just use the tried and true 5w30 every 5000 miles. Agreed. With 160,000 miles on it the chances of leaks will increase. Most likely you will be fine switching to synthetic, but I wouldnt chance it. Keep to your current routine. At this stage in the game I can't say that I see the point of switching to synthetic. Just use the tried and true 5w30 every 5000 miles. You change Dino oil every 5000 miles? Did you do an analysis to determine that? Come on Andy? Whats wrong with 5K on dino? Nothing. If you read the owners manual it will say to go 5K to 7.5K depending on usage. The 3000 mile oil change interval (except for EXTREME use) is a myth. Remember, we have been told for over 40 years to change oil (mostly because of fuel dilution) every 3000 miles, and I find it hard to believe oil hasnt advanced at all in 40 years, not to mention emission controls have helped stop fuel dilutions issues. Good luck.
jrrod2004 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I thought Royal Purple mady a synthetic for high mileage vehicles....
