Repair Instructions For Windshield Fluid Heater?

Could someone please post and/or send me the GM instructions for dealers on how to repair the windshield fluid heater? I heard it was just an inline fuse. Is this fix a real fix, or is it just a safety measure incase the unit shorts?

I am having mine fixed at the dealer tomorrow.... I can see if they will allow me to take a copy of the instructions. I'll ask.

There really is no instructions,You unplug the original harness going into the heater,then plug in the new harness with the 5 amp mini-fuse,you then plug the original harness into the new harness. (All it is is a "jumper harness" that goes in-between the original harness and the heater unit)

So no instructions but I assume there is a new Harness that GM has to replace the old Harness? Part number or is it not available to the General Public??

20773432 is the part number of the harness used in the recall.

 

Here's the instructions from GM......

 

Important: The windshield solvent heater module is located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment near the front fender upper brace (if equipped), master cylinder reservoir, and lower plenum panel. For the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne, the windshield solvent heater module is mounted to the front of dash on the passenger’s side of the engine compartment.

 

Locate the windshield solvent heater module.

 

Disconnect the windshield solvent heater module wire harness from the heater module.

 

Connect the jumper harness with the in-line fuse to the windshield solvent heater module wire harness.

 

Connect the other end of the jumper harness into the connector at the windshield solvent heater module.

 

Ensure that the jumper harness and windshield solvent heater module wire harness are routed and secured properly.

 

For vehicles that previously had the 60 amp heated windshield washer fuse removed, retrieve the fuse from the glove compartment and reinstall the fuse.

I just had this fixed a couple weeks ago on a day off. I guess I always thought the dealer "had" to install any safety recalls for any liability reasons, is this incorrect?? Since the fix is free i didn't really care if I did it or not and I only live 5 minutes away, but I was just wondering for future info.

Word of advice - take it to the dealer - that way if your truck has some sort of other wiring malfunction dealing with the heating unit you will be more app to be covered than if your truck burns and you stated you did the work yourself. Just a heads up from an adjusters point of view.

I absolutely agree on the dealer doing the work as it is a Recall issue.

Word of advice - take it to the dealer - that way if your truck has some sort of other wiring malfunction dealing with the heating unit you will be more app to be covered than if your truck burns and you stated you did the work yourself. Just a heads up from an adjusters point of view.

 

 

My dealer is over 100 miles away so I am screwed.

Took the truck to the dealer a week ago for a oil leak issue and the washer recall. They installed the in line fuse but never replaced the fuse under the hood which was removed by a different dealer.. Guess they don`t test their work. They could not find the oil leak either. Stevie Wonder could have seen the oil on the bell housing. Time to find a new dealer for service.

We are suppose to perform any/all recalls needing done on a vehicle.

I would think that dealers have to do the work on a safety recall simply because of the necessity for updating the service records and to possibly generate reports to the government agency that issued the recall.

 

A vehicle owner simply getting the part may not satisfy the requirements of the recall process.

 

And I would think that any local dealer would preform recall work. There would be no reason to go back to the selling dealer especially given the distance.

Is it just the your dealer is a 100 miles away or is there another GM dealer in your area? You may want to check as I think ay GM dealer has to honor your warranty. I may be incorrect, but that has always been my understanding.
