Tranny Fluid - 2000 Sierra 2500 4wd

I just purchased a used 2000 Sierra 2500 4WD, with 5.7L

I want to change the manual transmission fluid, but have 2 questions:

1. how much fluid to add after draining? The tag on the case says use Castrol Syntorq LT, GM PN: 18306

2. I can see the leveling plug, but no filler plug or drain plug - what gives?

appreciate the help.. This is a great truck.

Keith,

Look into your manuals that came with the truck, OR call your nearest service dept. and ask what the capacity of the box really is. OR drain the fluid into a pail large enough to hold it,(manual box shouldn't be much). Match that amount and pour the same amout in place of the old oil. That should do it. This isn't rocket science! P.S. Too much is a lot safer than not enough!

I would love to drain the fluid. My problem, and the reason I posted the question - I don't see a drain plug. Just a level-check plug halfway up the case.

Can you tell me how to drain the fluid with no drain plug in sight?

Thanks.

You might have to remove the pan to drain it :happysad:

My genuine GM 2000 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Sierra, Yukon, manual seems to be only for the New body with the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 eng type. However, the transmissions may be common. If yours has a NV 4500 manual trans, it has a 4.0 quart capacity of the stuff you mentioned above. If it's a NV3500, it holds 2.2 quarts of "Synchromesh Transmission Fluid GM P/N 12345349"

A quick look at the difference between a NV3500 and the NV4500 shows the 3500 has an integral bellhousing and many exterior ribs with a tapered tail shape. The 4500 has a separate bellhousing and has a very boxy shape like old manual tranmissions of yesteryear and a flat aft gearbox surface for the tailshaft housing.

If it's a NV4500, the drain plug is just below the fill plug. It's hard to tell in these pix because they never show the drain and fill plugs in relation to the whole transmision, but it appears that they are both on the right side of the main box near the tail shaft housing end.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions guys.

Yes, there is a stamping on the driver's side of the tranny casing that says "4500" so presumably its the NV 4500.

And yes, it has a boxy shape. The filler plug is clearly visible on the passenger side of the case and has a plastic tag on it saying use only Castrol Syntorq LT. The plug takes an Allen key. I removed it yesterday and stuck my finger in to check the fluid level. It was OK.

However, I am 100% certain there is no drain plug below it, or anywhere on the tranny case for that matter. I was under the truck 3 times with a light. There is no drain plug. However, there is a flattened round area on the case below the filler plug, which looks like a logical place for a drilling for a drain plug. But none there.

A mystery.....?
