2000 Suburban Cold Start Up Questions

Sorry for the basic questions but this is a "new" truck for me. 2000 Suburban w/ 94k on the clock. 5.3 engine.

Started the truck first thing this morning when it was about 6 degrees outside. Started fine but the idle fluctuated wildly. About 12 to 1300 rpm then dropped to about 700 and almost died. Back up to over 1000RPM and back down to around 700, struggling to stay running. This cycling repeated numerous times with the "low" point gradually dropping to approx. 500 RPM and eventually evening out after 5 or so minutes. I tried giving it some gas when it sounded like it was going to die and it revved up and didn't want to come down right away. Just did not seem normal. I am used to a higher idle on other vehicles not the up/down (and almost dying) cycling of this one. Runs fine when warm.

Is this normal for the 5.3 or could something be wrong?

Thanks

Kevin
